Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Father Knows Best
Answer: Jim Anderson
Jim was played by Robert Young for six seasons. Jim was the father to three children, Betty, Bud and Kathy (who he called Kitten). Jim would come home nightly to his wife, Margaret, from working at an insurance company all day and try to be the 'moral lesson' man in each episode. The family was always happy and hugging. Margaret was always in a dress and apron taking care of the home. The daily adventures of the three children were always fun to watch in the '50s. Now I wasn't around back then, but I enjoyed watching the reruns later.
Robert Young played the character of Jim perfectly! Not only was the role of his daughter, Betty, but his real wife was Betty Henderson, whom he married in 1933. Robert went on to play the role of Marcus Welby MD and won his first Emmy in 1970.
If I was ever to be counseled by a television father, it would be Jim Anderson. He always counseled but explained why it was wrong.
2. Happy Days
Answer: Howard Cunningham
Howard Cunningham always had a mellow approach to playing the father figure. One of his children "disappeared" and he still was mellow. His two children, Joanie and Richie grew up in the Milwaukee area and Howard ran his hardware store while his wife Marion was the 'stay at home mom" agreeing with Howard, most of the time. The television show was set in the 1950s where the wife usually did have to agree and say, "yes Howard". There were no disagreements in public back then.
Howard was played by Tom Bosley for ten years. You wonder if he tried to play the role of father to his television family.
3. Leave it to Beaver
Answer: Ward Cleaver
Hugh Beaumont played the role of Ward Cleaver, who wore a suit to work daily and came home to his wife, June and his two sons, Wally and Theodore nightly. The television show began in the '50s where the mom would wear a dress while making dinner and the boys would play with the neighbor children after school. Theodore was nicknamed "the Beaver" by his older brother. Wally had a difficult time pronouncing "Theodore" and the nickname and show name stuck! Beaver Cleaver it was!
The boys always seemed to find trouble, especially with their neighbor, Eddie Haskell. He was trouble every step of the way. Ken Osmond played the role of the trouble instigator!
The television show ran until 1963 and the foursome family was in every single episode.
4. The Brady Bunch
Answer: Mike Brady
We never really heard too much about the past marriage for Mike Brady. All we know is that he was the 'single pop' to Greg, Peter and Bobby until he met and married Carol! Carol and Mike were married on the first episode and the family of four grew to a family of eight. Not including the housekeeper, Alice, which made it a nice round number of nine!
Mike was an architect and would come home from the office nightly and try to put his moral ideas and values into the family. Carol was the perfect mom who would usually agree with her 'groovy' husband. They had such fun episodes where they wore their bell bottom pants and flowery shirts. The men and boys went through an afro stage while the girls had long blonde hair!
The show ran from 1969 to 1974 and went on to make a few movies, with and without the original family.
Mike Brady was portrayed by John Robert Rietz Jr. you may recall him as Robert Reed. He never won an award for "The Brady Bunch" but he did get a few Emmy nominations for other shows including, "Medical Center".
5. Growing Pains
Answer: Ed Malone
Maggie's father, Ed, visited the Seavers a few times. Ed Malone is played by Gordon Jump, who was in "WKRP in Cincinnati" for four seasons.
The first time we meet Maggie's dad, the Seavers decided to visit Ed and his wife, Kate. The episode was "Be a Man", as they play a betting game, while drinking shots! The last episode was "Home Malone", after Ed has passed away. He appears as a ghost in his own home. Saying goodbye is a little difficult no matter if you're dead or alive.
6. The Wonder Years
Answer: Jack Arnold
Kevin's dad, Jack Arnold was played by Dan Lauria. The show, "The Wonder Years" was based on the '60s and '70s with Kevin and his teenager years. Jack was the proud Republican in the family and came off with a blunt, rough outlook. His wife, Norma was just the opposite character as her husband. She was the fun and lively one of the couple.
Dan Lauria played in quite a few television shows over the years, "Growing Pains", "Boy Meets World" and "Cagney & Lacey" to name just a few. He was most known for playing Kevin Arnold's dad though.
7. Grey's Anatomy
Answer: Derek Shepherd
Aka McDreamy and yes he was! We were so happy to see Derek on the beach of the 17th season of "Grey's Anatomy". Even if he was dead, he brought a smile to so many of us that had a hard time coping with his death in the 11th season of "Grey's". He played the role of 'dad' to three beautiful children with Meredith. Zola, Derek Bailey and Ellis. Derek was the head of Neurosurgery in the beginning of the show. We were able to share the laughter and tears with his on screen romance with Meredith. That was, until the car accident that cost him his life on the show and we lost our 'McDreamy".
Patrick Dempsey played the role of Derek for 11 seasons and then returned for a few more episodes in 2020. Patrick was born in Maine in 1966 and has given women so many romantic movies, including my favorites, "Enchanted" and "Sweet Home Alabama". I'm hoping to see a few more 'dreamy' episodes in "Grey's".
8. Cheers
Answer: Eddie LeBec
One of our favorite waitresses was Carla Tortelli. She was married and divorced from her dead beat ex husband, Nick Tortelli and then remarried Eddie LeBec and had two children with Eddie. Elvis and Jesse LeBec. Carla had the luck, with getting pregnant, she had eight children!
Eddie was a hockey player and Carla fell for him. They were married after she found out she was pregnant with twins! Jay Thomas played the role of Eddie for three seasons and ended up getting killed by a zamboni! Come to find out, he wasn't 'all that' after the death and Carla went back to Carla Tortelli, the name not the ex husband!
9. Friends
Answer: Dr. Leonard Green
The television show, "Friends" had many parents that we saw on screen. Rachel's father was played by Ron Leibman. My favorite episode is where he catches Ross with a cigarette hanging out of his mouth. I still chuckle at the episode, "The One with the Two Parties".
They had two parties so Rachel's parents, who were divorced, wouldn't be at the same party. Dr. Green was not the sweetest dad in the world. You sort of understand the divorce after meeting the man. Ron passed away in 2019 in New York.
10. Mork and Mindy
Answer: Fred McConnell
Mindy's father was played by Conrad Janis, who was born in 1928 in New York City. Conrad played in many television shows, but was mostly known for "Mork and Mindy". Even though his daughter was going to marry an alien, he wasn't fond of him at first, but he supported his daughter's decision. Fred ran a music store but always wanted to lead an orchestra, giving up the music store to fulfill his dream!
After Mork and Mindy were married they had a child, or should I say egg? I guess I'll end this quiz with a 'Nanu Nanu and good night'!
