The British pound (GBP) is more than 1,200 years old. The currency dates from Anglo-Saxon times.

In 775 CE, King Offa of Mercia introduced sterling silver pennies. Banknotes followed in 1853 (Victorian times).
It is currently the fourth most traded currency in the foreign exchange market, after the US dollar (USD), euro (EUR) and Japanese yen (JPY).
