Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Fill in the Blank: Pensacola is known as the City of _____ Flags.

Answer: Five

This city is truly historic being controlled by three different foreign countries, the United States, and the Confederacy.
2. Pensacola has been controlled by a lot of different world powers. Which of these countries is NOT one of them?

Answer: Portugal

To be exact, Pensacola has been controlled by Spain, France, England, the Confederacy of the United States, and the United States.
3. Pensacola is home to one of America's most popular precision flight teams, what is that team's name?

Answer: Blue Angels

Yep, our hometown birds...stationed at NAS on the edge of Pensacola Bay.
4. Pensacola is the location of some of the whitest beaches in all the world.

Answer: True

And they are BEAUTIFUL...consisting of 99% pure quartz. The beaches here are baby powder fine (none of that yellow grit like the East Coast), pure white, and actually make squeeking sounds when you walk on them.
5. Which body of water runs along the coast of Pensacola?

Answer: Gulf of Mexico

And it is equally dazzling as it is very clear, aquamarine blue, and contrasted against the white sand like a jewel.
6. Years ago, the military scuttled a battleship in the mouth of Pensacola Bay that is now listed as an underwater preserve and popular dive site. What was the name of the battleship?

Answer: USS Massachusetts

I've never seen it as I don't scuba dive, but the ship lies in only 30 feet of water and is very popular for the sea life its massive hull attracts.
7. If you are a betting man or woman, Pensacola is the home of an establishment where you could fufill that urge to place your bets, what type of establishment do we have?

Answer: Greyhound Track

Not too uncommon, but a track all the same. We recently made national news due to an incident where mass amounts of the retired and un-fast were taken over the border into Alabama and mass slaughtered. VERY sad. However, if you are looking to adopt a purebred Greyhound...this is the place to do it.
8. Pensacola is mostly home to what military superpower?

Answer: US Navy

VERY much a military town...the large and beautiful base, N.A.S. takes up most of west Pensacola and contains an awesome Naval Aviation Museum (that rivals the National Air and Space Museum), a 200-year-old lighthouse, a huge pre-Civil War fort (build by the Spanish), and homebase of the famous Blue Angels.
9. True or False: Pensacola is the first European settlement in North America?

Answer: True

Founded in 1559, Pensacola has St. Augustine beat by six years. St. Augustine was founded in 1565.
10. Another fort, Ft. Pickens, build during the Civil War to protect Pensacola Bay housed some pretty famous Indians. Name the most famous Indian to be housed there.

Answer: Geronimo

Pretty interesting...it's neat to see the old prints that show the Indians sitting around the fort.
11. True or False: Pensacola is home of the longest fishing pier on the Coast.

Answer: True

I believe it is over a quarter mile long. My boyfriend spends way too many hours on the end of it. Since it was opened last summer, countless King and Spanish Mackeral and Bonita have been caught...a couple of Tarpon have been hooked (rare if you know anything about ocean fishing), and even a BILLFISH was caught (extraordinarily rare).
12. True or False: Pensacola was once considered to become the capital city of Florida.

Answer: True

Warring factions between Pensacola and St. Augustine fought over capitalship...a compromise was decided and Tallahassee became the capital of Florida.
13. Pensacola is home to several historic and important old forts that are no longer in use. Which fort is NOT one of ours?

Answer: Fort Morgan

Fort Morgan protects Mobile Bay, Alabama, and sits on Dauphin Island. Fort Pickens and Fort Barrancas are still very much standing and interesting to tour. Fort McRee formed the third leg of the triangle protecting Pensacola and was long ago wiped out by a hurricane as it was built on a sand barrier island. Also interesting, the forts of Pensacola saw Civil War action BEFORE Fort Sumter was even fired upon as the US and Confederacy battled for the strongholds.
14. In 1559, a European settler established Pensacola, what was his name?

Answer: de Luna

Trisan de Luna founded Pensacola in 1559, making the city 441 years old (as of 2002). St. Augustine was founded in 1565. De Luna's landing is reinacted yearly during the Fiesta of Five Flags...complete with the king and his court, Mayoki Indians, pirates (Fiesta Forces), and various Krewes.
15. Pensacola is home to the Westernmost Florida Key...what is the name of that key?

Answer: Perdido Key

It's a beautiful island fully loaded with all sorts of resorts and sporting the same white sands and aquamarine waters. All the other keys listed are actual keys and located in South Florida.
