A Neo-Western is a modern reimagining of the traditional Western genre, often set in contemporary times or dystopian futures, while retaining the core themes of lawlessness, rugged individualism and the pursuit of justice. It explores how the Old West mentality has evolved into the late 20th and 21st centuries, often featuring characters struggling to adapt to a "civilised" world that no longer values their brand of justice.
Some neo-Westerns, such as "No Country for Old Men" and "Hell or High Water", are still set in the American West, while others, such as "Coogan's Bluff" and "Midnight Cowboy", are urban Westerns, bringing the frontier spirit to cities like New York. The TV series "Justified" moves the genre to Eastern Kentucky.
