Liquid gold is commonly known as oil (petroleum) because of its high price and value and its economic "need".

In the opening song to the Beverly Hillbillies the term "liquid gold" is used to describe oil.

the ballad of Jed Clampett uses two terms for oil in the opening texas tea and black gold

"Oil that is, black gold, Texas tea. "

Black gold is a much more common reference to mineral oil because lets face it it does not look very golden comming out of the ground.

"liquid gold" is used in referance to too many diverse products to assign its meaning to just one.
