Yes, of course.

Dean Thomas, Angelina Johnson, Lee Jordan are black. Cho Chang is Chinese, and the twins Parvati and Padma Patil are Indian.

Hispanic characters shouldn't be expected. Aside from Spaniards and Portuguese immigrants to Britain (and the Brits seem to go the other way), this is really a U.S. issue.

No, you didn't. As Frankie says, Latino isn't a term used in the UK and we don;t have all that many Spanish or Portuguese here. Waiters in Blackpool (Spanish) and workers in lettuce growing greenhouses (Portuguese) but they are single people or with families back home. We have far more Greek Cypiots and Chinese (some of whom have been in the Liverpool area so long they can't speak any Chinese language at all!). I don't remember any reference in the books to Dean Thomas's colour. Angelina Johnson is black, too.

Right you are, Baloo, Angelina IS black. As for Dean, he is described as "a Black boy even taller than Ron" on p. 122 of my copy of "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's [Philosopher's] Stone." That would be during the Sorting Hat scene.

As I've indicated to Baloo in a pm, it turns out that Dean's color was edited out of the U.K. edition but retained in the U.S. version.

Earlier today, someone pointed out to me that Blaise Zabini is also black, as indicated in "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince," p. 143:

"a tall black boy with high cheekbones and long, slanting eyes."

I've always had the feeling that the first couple of books were rather edited. Unlike the later ones, when she was able to take control. There may be a later publication of the unedited versions. This happened with at least one of Robert Heinlein's books. We can but hope.
