Answer: Hector

Hector was a prince of Troy, and also the commanding officer of the Trojan army. This was a moving speech that was meant to give the Trojans courage before their fight. The Trojans were fighting against the Greek army, because of Helen.

Helen says this line to Paris on the night before he returns to Troy, signifying her fear of being alone again. Because of this, Paris decides to bring her home with him.

Answer: Briseis

Briseis was Paris and Hector's cousin, and had become a servant of the Sun God, Apollo. She had been found in the temple of Apollo when the Mermidans attacked and killed the priests. She was given to Achilles to "amuse" him, but then was taken by Menelaus because Menelaus was angry with Achilles for charging the beach of Troy alone, without the rest of the army. Later she was returned to Achilles. Right before Achilles died, he told Briseis that she had given him peace in a lifetime of war. Briseis played a huge part in the plot, she almost cost the Greeks the war by "distracting" Achilles with love.

The legend says that Briseis was not taken from Achilles because Agamemnon was mad at him. He had to give back Chryseis, his prize of war, to make the gods happy and he wanted Briseis to replace her.

King Triopas asked this of Achilles, after Achilles wiped out Boagrius with one swing of his blade on the Thessaly battlegrounds. He inquired into Achilles' past and Achilles mentioned his father. King Triopas reluctantly joined Agamemnon's army after this.

This was part of Hector's speech to the Trojans before the battle with the Greeks. This speech was after Paris had forfeited the one-to-one battle with Menelaus, and also after Hector had defended Paris by killing Menelaus.

Agamemnon wanted to make Briseis his slave, so he'd had her taken from Achilles' tent. Achilles became angry, and drew his sword, ready to fight Agamemnon's men.

Patroclus had stolen Achilles' armor and wore it in to battle, because Achilles was planning on taking his men and sailing home the next day. Patroclus didn't want to betray the army as Achilles was planning to do, so he led Achilles' men in to battle while pretending to be Achilles. During the battle Patroclus met up with Hector, and Hector killed Patroclus in a fair fight. When Achilles found out that Hector cut his cousin's throat, he wanted revenge. Achilles went to Troy, and stood just out side the Trojan walls yelling Hector's name to come and fight him.

Homer uses the support of the Gods to demonstrate the superiority of certain people. Throughout his poem his heroes receive aid at moments of victory and are abandoned in the moments of their defeat or failure. 'Troy' has the gods only in a very peripheral role. The temple of Apollo is sacked by the rampaging Myrmidons, and he is seen as the protector of Troy. The gods do not however enter the action.

The men react enthusiastically and succeed in initially defeating the Trojans, although they do not join the battle again because of the dispute between Achilles and Agamemnon.

Since Paris stole Menelaus' wife, Helen, they were to battle each other for Helen. As the two were fighting, Paris was wounded and he was going down fast. Just before Menelaus tried to kill Paris, he ran back and grabbed his brother Hector's, feet. Menelaus said he would kill Paris at Hector's feet if he had to, but just before he struck, Hector killed him, and saved his brother's life. This caused the battle following Menelaus' death to start.

Achilles was originally a soldier from Odysseus' army before they merged with Agamemnon. Odysseus was the only person who could control Achilles. That was his main purpose, other than fighting.

It is interesting to note that Helen is never physically described by Homer. She is supposed to be the greatest beauty and the most attractive woman ever to grace the world. His descriptions of Helen are regarding her actions and mindset, not her physical attributes. Played in 'Troy' by Diane Kruger, Helen is said to have "the face that launched a thousand ships".

This showed how much Achilles loved Patroclus, and why Achilles wanted to avenge his cousin's death so badly.

The legend tells how Patroclus and Achilles were really close friends, but when Hector killed Patroclus, Achilles still wanted his revenge.
