Gus Poyet won the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup in 1995 with Real Zaragoza, who beat Arsenal 2-1 in the final. After a four year spell with Chelsea, Poyet would go on to join Arsenal's bitter North London rivals Tottenham in 2001. Poyet also won the Copa America in 1995 with Uruguay.

During his managerial career Poyet introduced basketball to training sessions at Sunderland, who he managed from 2013-2015. He believed basketball to have many similarities with soccer, particularly marking.

Poyet's son, Diego, also went on to play professional soccer. Despite being born in Zaragoza he went on to represent England at schoolboy level before switching to Uruguay at Under-20 level.

Chelsea signed Raul Meireles from Liverpool -- with Michael Essien out with a knee injury signing a midfielder for the 2011-12 season was crucial. He scored his first Premier League goal for Chelsea in a 2-1 win at home vs. Manchester City in December 2012 (to end Manchester City's undefeated start to the season). He also scored goals against Genk in the Champions League and Birmingham City and Leicester City in the FA Cup.

Di Matteo joined Chelsea from Lazio in 1996. In the 1997 FA Cup Final he scored after only 42 seconds against Middlesbrough. It was, at the time, the fastest goal to be scored in an FA Cup final at Wembley. Chelsea went on to win the match 2-0. Di Matteo also won the FA Cup in 2000 with Chelsea, as well as the 1998 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup and the 1998 UEFA Super Cup. He suffered a leg break in 2001, which eventually forced him to retire from playing eighteen months later at the age of only 31.

Di Matteo would go on to manage Chelsea, winning the FA Cup and UEFA Champions League, both in 2012. This was the first time in their history Chelsea had won the Champions League. Despite this, poor form the following season saw Di Matteo fired in November 2012.

Norwegian Flo joined Chelsea from SK Brann in 1997 and scored some memorable goals for The Blues, including a brace against Barcelona in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League Quarter-Final in the 1999-2000 season. Chelsea won the match 3-1 but despite Flo scoring in the second leg Barcelona went on to win the tie 6-4 on aggregate. The introduction of Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink and Eidur Gudjohnsen saw Flo drop down the pecking order at Chelsea and in November 2000 he signed for Scottish side Rangers for a then record transfer sum paid for a Norwegian player. It was also a then Scottish record fee also. Flo failed to live up to expectations however, and despite scoring 29 goals in 53 appearances he was sold to Sunderland in 2002.

Daniel Sturridge is a striker, although in 2011-12 he had played more out wide. He is extremely quick and is very skillful. He also likes to cut inside when on the wing and curl in shots from all angles. He made his international debut for England in November 2011.
