Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. 2010: Chelsea's first senior signing of the 2010s was Israeli winger Yossi Benayoun, from which English team?

Answer: Liverpool

Benayoun played for all four of these teams as well as Chelsea, also playing in Spain, the Netherlands, and his native Israel. He retired at Beitar Jerusalem in 2019 at the age of 39.
2. 2011: Chelsea signed exciting goalkeeping prospect Thibaut Courtois from KRC Genk in the summer of 2011, but he was immediately loaned out to which club?

Answer: Atletico Madrid

Courtois spent three years on loan at Atletico, playing in a Champions League final in that time. He then returned to Chelsea as the long-term replacement for Petr Cech. He departed for Real Madrid in 2018, in a move which angered fans of both Chelsea and Atletico Madrid.
3. 2012: Fresh from winning their first Champions League, Chelsea secured the signatures of which pair of brothers?

Answer: Eden and Thorgan Hazard

Eden has been the more successful brother both at Chelsea and in terms of trophies. Both of the brothers played together for the Belgian national team, which Eden also captained. A third Hazard brother, Kylian, joined from Hungarian side Ujpest in 2017.
4. 2013: From which Russian side did Chelsea sign Brazilian forward Willian?

Answer: Anzhi Makhachkala

Willian had been having a medical in London with Tottenham Hotspur before Chelsea came in with a bid. He subsequently captained Chelsea and was named the club's Player of the Year in 2016.
5. 2014: Chelsea signed three strikers for the senior team in the summer of 2014. Which of these was NOT one of them?

Answer: Demba Ba

Demba Ba left the club for Turkish side Besiktas during the summer. The Senegalese forward is best remembered at Chelsea for capitalising on Steven Gerrard's infamous slip during a 2-0 win at Anfield.
6. 2015: The 2015-16 season was a disaster for Chelsea, the defending Premier League titleholders, and was preceded by numerous bizarre signings which made little impact during their time in London, including the loan signing of which former Manchester United flop?

Answer: Radamel Falcao

Falcao managed to score just one goal for Chelsea in his season-long stay at the club, joining a long list of players who have underperformed while wearing the number 9 jersey for the Blues. The Colombian returned to parent club AS Monaco at the end of the season.
Chelsea finished the 2015-16 season mid-table in 10th place (Leicester City were surprise champions). Jose Mourinho was sacked in December 2015.
7. 2016: Chelsea raided surprise champions Leicester City for which of their title winners?

Answer: N'golo Kanté

Kanté would then achieve the rare feat of winning back-to-back Premier Leagues with different clubs, as well as going on to win the FA Cup, PFA Players' Player of the Year, and the World Cup with France.
8. 2017: The series of lackluster Chelsea number 9s continued as the club parted with a then-club record fee to sign Alvaro Morata from which European side?

Answer: Real Madrid

The Spanish forward started his time at Chelsea well, before his form faded and he was deemed surplus to requirements by Maurizio Sarri. Morata then joined Atletico Madrid on loan with an option to buy, which the Spanish club later exercised.
9. 2018: Maurizio Sarri's only summer in charge saw him sign two goalkeepers. He spent a world record fee to sign Kepa Arrizabalaga from Athletic Bilbao, but also made a strange move for which former England international to act as cover?

Answer: Rob Green

Green was signed on a free transfer from Huddersfield Town, and never played a competitive fixture for Chelsea. A lack of game time did not stop him from lifting the Europa League trophy in Baku, in his final action as a professional footballer.
10. 2019: Chelsea were hit with a two-window transfer ban by FIFA in February 2019. However, they were able to sign one senior player who had been on loan at the club during the 2018-19 season. Who was this?

Answer: Mateo Kovacic

Kovacic had initially joined Chelsea on loan from Real Madrid as part of the deal which saw Thibaut Courtois join Los Blancos. The Croatian midfielder was able to join the club on a permanent basis as he had been registered with the club prior to the transfer ban being imposed.
The ban was reduced to one transfer-window on appeal.
