Gullit managed Chelsea from 1996-1998. During his spell he won the FA Cup in 1997. A falling out with the Chelsea board saw him replaced with Vialli following the first leg of the English League Cup Semi-Final against Arsenal in 1998. Vialli would go on to win the competition and also won the 1998 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup. He also won the UEFA Super Cup in 1998 as well as the 2000 FA Cup and the FA Charity Shield in the 2000-2001 season.

With five trophies in under three years, Vialli was, at the time, the most successful manager in Chelsea's history in terms of silverware. Despite this, he was sacked just five games into the 2000-2001 season following a poor run of form and a dispute with several Chelsea players.
