Ferdinand Lewis Alcindor was born in 1947 in Harlem, New York. He went to UCLA before becoming the first overall pick in the 1969 draft, and was taken by the Milwaukee Bucks. He won Rookie of the Year, and led the Bucks to the NBA title. Shortly thereafter he converted to Islam, and legally changed his name to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. He was traded to the Los Angeles Lakers in 1975. He went on to win five more championships. Kareem won six NBA MVP awards, was a 19 time all-star, and was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 1995.
