Arthur would go on to live in Doug and Carrie's basement for most of the duration of the series. Doug is forced to move the tv into the garage, where he and his friends Deacon Palmer, Richie Iannucci, Spence Ulchan and, later in the series, his cousin Danny often get together to watch sporting events.

Heffer-can was a nickname given to Doug by a classmate who claimed he caught Doug licking food from the inside of a trash can. He was also known as Hefferlegs and Pound Cake when he played running back in high school. "Doug-Less" is a two-part episode featuring a slimmer Doug, but was never referred by the name.

The sandwich was made of pastrami, onion rings and horseradish. This was a modified version of a sandwich Doug had invented. Doug was enraged by this because he had always wanted a sandwich named after himself.

While it was never revealed which snack was actually Doug's favorite, he did once refer to Ho Hos as the very similar but less satisfying version of the Yodel, which meant Ho Hos were not his favorite.

Doug told Carrie a story of how he once stole a Clark bar when he was a kid and felt so guilty about it, he actually vomited. When he asked Carrie if she had ever stolen anything, she told Doug about the highjacking story, which made Doug terrified.

This was mentioned in the season 5 episode "Taste Buds". In this episode, Doug, who realizes Arthur is the only one who ever gets what he wants from Carrie, tricks Arthur into asking for things Doug likes.

Carrie spent most of her time upstairs in her home office working on a big case, leaving her very little time for Doug, except for an occasional pause to have sex, making her the "upstairs wife". Holly, the "downstairs wife" who was staying temporarily with the Heffernans, cooked for Doug, listened to his stories and let him do basically anything Carrie would not usually allow.

The "Coliseum wife" was the sister of one one of Doug's friends. She worked at The Nassau Coliseum and provided Doug with excellent seats at The New York Islanders games.

Carrie and Spence became step-siblings when Carrie's father Arthur married Spence's mother Veronica in the series finale.

In the episode "Slippery Slope", Danny and Spence pretend to be life partners to get a free weekend at a timeshare ski resort for couples. Also free was a plasma tv just for attending a sales pitch, but for married couples only. Danny and Spence decide the free tv was worth getting married for.

In the episode "Get Away", Doug and Carrie take Deacon and Kelly on a vacation, where Doug and Carrie would frequently hear the song "Let's Get It On" by Marvin Gaye playing from Deacon and Kelly's hotel room while Deacon and Kelly made love. This would cause Doug to feel more and more awkward each time he heard the song play, because it made him realize he isn't nearly as active as Deacon is.

Carrie is fed up with Doug's poor eating habits and demands him to join an Overeaters Anonymous group to deal with his problem. Doug reluctantly agrees to go but then instead enters the meeting across the hall, which happens to be of men in abusive relationships, when he notices they serve doughnuts.

But after the other members persuade Doug to vent his frustrations, they make him realize Carrie's anger is what causes him to overeat.

At their high school reunion, Doug and Jeff come up with a plan to get revenge on their ex-principal.

In the series finale, "China Syndrome", Arthur marries Veronica. Also, Doug and Carrie fly to China to adopt a baby named Ming-Mei and, while still in China, Carrie finds out she is pregnant. The episode fast-forwards one year, where in the final scene, Doug, Carrie, Ming-Mei, and their baby boy are shown in their living room in total chaos, when all of a sudden Arthur walks in, suitcases in hand, shouting the words "it didn't work out".
