Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. B + the type of boat that God told Noah to build = the sound made by some animals

Answer: Bark

B + ark = bark

Ark was the boat built by Noah to survive the flood. Ark is also the name given to the chest that contained the Ten Commandments. The word ark can among other things mean shelter or refuge.

The bark is the harsh sound, which sometimes sounds like a cough, produced by dogs and also by some other animals such as wolves and coyotes. The word bark has other meanings in botany, pharmacology, etc.
2. B + one of the cardinal points = a cruel person or animal

Answer: Beast

B + East = beast

East is one of the four cardinal points; it is 90° clockwise from the north and is the direction of the earth's axial rotation.

The word beast is generally used to refer to a wild animal or a rude or cruel person. Beast means monster, savage or barbarian. The figure of the beast is very popular in literature, cinema, theater, and television through the fairy tale "Beauty and the Beast" (French: La Belle et La Bęte) published in 1740, written by French novelist Gabrielle-Suzanne Bardot de Villeneuve.
3. C + something given as charity = makes relaxed

Answer: Calms

C + alms = calms

Alms is a plural name that refers to money or goods given to the poor as charitable donations.

"Calms" is from the verb to calm which means to be undisturbed, almost without rough motion, tranquil. The verb can be transitive "to make calm" or intransitive "to become calm, relax, appease".
4. C + hurry = punish

Answer: Chasten

C + hasten = chasten

To hurry means to act with rapidity or haste, sometimes even unduly. To hurry, often followed by "up" is a synonym for hasten or to rush.

To punish is to inflict a penalty for a fault, a sin, or an offense. It is synonymous with chasten, penalize, to reprove. The word chasten is an alliteration of the word chaste, from Middle English chasten or chastien, from the Old French chastier, from Latin castigāre.
5. F + to equip with weapon = a piece of land for agricultural production

Answer: Farm

F + arm = farm

To equip with a weapon is the same as arming someone with a weapon to prepare for a fight or war. An arm is also the name given to a branch of a military force or an administrative or functional branch of an organization. It can be a synonym for a weapon or the name of the upper limb of the human body.

"Farm" is the term used to designate an area destined for the cultivation of plants for the production of food, raw materials for the industries (e.g. textile fibers, tobacco, bio-fuel, etc.), or the raising of animals; it can be an area destined for only one or several activities.
6. G + water plant = avarice

Answer: Greed

G + reed = greed

Reed is the name given to tall and perennial grasses, especially those of the Phragmites and Arundo genera, with hollow stems and large plumes panicles, which grow in wetlands. Reed is also the name of a flexible strip set into the mouthpiece or air opening of certain musical instruments.

Avarice, also called greed, is an excessive attachment to wealth, material goods, and the desire to always have more. Avarice is listed by the Catholic Church among the deadly sins; it first appeared in a list by the Christian monk Evagrius Ponticus (345 - 399 AD) as being the main thought that harms religious practice.
7. K + female singer from Ireland = African country

Answer: Kenya

K + Enya = Kenya

Enya Patricia Brennan (born 1961), known as Enya, is an Irish singer, songwriter, and musician who became internationally known for promoting modern Celtic music. She was born into a family of musicians and started her career in her family's folk band. In 1982, she began her solo career and became the best-selling Irish solo artist and the second best-selling after the band U2. I very much like her song "If I could be where you are".

The Republic of Kenya is a country located in Eastern Africa, with a coastline on the Indian Ocean. It is bisected by the Equator and is also on the shores of Lake Victoria. The country's official languages are Swahili and English. Kenya has a varied ecosystem, which includes low land savannas, deserts, swamps, mountains, and forests. Its capital is Nairobi, which sits at an altitude of 5500 feet (1700 meters).
8. S + automobile = mark left by an injury

Answer: Scar

S + car = scar

A car, automobile, or motorcar is a self-propelled road vehicle, generally with four wheels, suitable for carrying people and traditionally powered by an internal combustion engine.

A scar is a mark, usually permanent, that remains on the skin or other tissue that has been bruised or burned, even after it has healed. The term scar is also used to name the scars that remain in our minds after disasters, and traumatic situations, which often reveal themselves through nightmares and anxiety.
9. T + female sorcerer = a sudden motion

Answer: Twitch

T + witch = twitch

A female sorcerer is a woman believed to have special powers derived from evil and is called a witch. This term is also used to describe a spiteful, arrogant, or mean person.

Twitch, spasm, jerk, and wink are words that mean to give or cause an involuntary or spasmodic muscle movement. Twitch is also the name given to the cord used to control a horse that is tight in its upper lip.
10. W + painter's stand = ermine

Answer: Weasel

W + easel = weasel

An easel is a self-supporting wooden frame, usually a three-legged rack, used by an artist to support the work that is being prepared or to show finished artwork.

A weasel is a small carnivorous mammal, belonging to the Mustela genus, of the Mustelidae family, which is characterized by a long, slender body and neck, short legs, a long tail, and reddish-brown short and dense fur, which in some species turns white in winter. Most of these animals live in the Northern Hemisphere. They mainly feed on small rodents and birds. In this group, in addition to the weasels, are ferrets, stoats, minks, and ermines.

I became interested in these animals after seeing a reproduction of the famous portrait painting, attributed to Leonardo da Vinci named "Lady with an Ermine" (c. 1489-1491). The original painting can be seen in the Museum of Art in Kraków, Poland.
