Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Opening in the face

Answer: Mouth

A fully grown adult hippopotamus can open its mouth to around four feet wide or 180 degrees. Hippos display their teeth to other hippos and predators to show a sign of strength, hoping it will frighten them away. With a bite force of roughly 8,130 Newtons per square inch, they also boast one of the strongest bites in the animal kingdom. Compared to a lion's bite, this is over three times as powerful.
2. Use when washing your hair

Answer: Shampoo

People and the hippopotamus don't mix too well. People who live in African villages often bathe, shampoo their hair, and wash their clothes in the rivers where the hippos live. The hippo, which is territorial, spends most of its life in the water and doesn't like intruders. The hippo has attacked and killed numerous people who were simply going about their normal lives.
3. Walkway or route

Answer: Path

As the hippo travels through the water and between the water and the land, their enormous size causes them to forge new paths and channels. During the rainy season, water pours through these channels, giving insects, birds, and other creatures additional places to live and shelter.
4. Free from roughness

Answer: Smooth

Generally speaking, the skin of a hippopotamus is smooth and very sensitive. They are prone to sunburn and spend most of the time in the water and like the elephant like the mud from the rivers. Different parts of the hippo are more sensitive than others.
5. Haze, fog or cloudiness

Answer: Mist

T.S. Eliot wrote a poem called "The Hippopotamus". The last verse of the poem mentions "Mist". Here is the last verse from the poem.

He shall be washed as white as snow,
By all the martyr'd virgins kist,
While the True Church remains below
Wrapt in the old miasmal mist.
6. Keeps your head warm

Answer: Hat

Julia Donaldson wrote a book in 2006 titled "Hippo Has A Hat." The children's book tells the story of a shopping trip in which a hippo, cat, and zebra, among others, try on a range of different clothes. The book is simple and recommended for children between three and four years old. It has lots of illustrations with vivid colours.
7. The hippopotamus can be found in what part of Africa?

Answer: South

Parts of Tanzania, Kenya, Zambia, Zimbabwe, South Africa, and Uganda are home to hippopotamuses. These animals' range has shrunk in recent years as a result of poaching and habitat loss.
8. Walk away in an angry manner

Answer: Stomp

When out of water, hippos are extremely sensitive to their surroundings and will respond with a thunderous foot stomp to even the slightest disturbance. If they caught you, they could easily bite you in half or stomp you into the ground.
9. Not dry; slightly wet; damp

Answer: Moist

To stay hydrated, hippos need to keep their skin moist with water or mud for the most of the day. Despite lacking sweat glands, they secrete blood sweat, a red fluid. This maintains their thick, delicate, reddish-brown skin hydrated and helps shield it from sunburn.
10. Not open; closed

Answer: Shut

Hippos tightly shut their nostrils and ears to keep water out when completely submerged. Hippos don't actually swim but run underneath the water. In general, the hippo can hold its breath for five minutes before going back up to the surface.
