Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. A simian animal without a tail.

Answer: Ape

Simians are monkeys and apes. Monkeys have tails and are found in the Americas and parts of Europe as well as Africa and Asia. Apes have no tails, and are found in many parts of both Africa and Asia.

Elephants, like apes, are also native to Africa and Asia, but they do have tails.
2. To put a seed into the ground or a pot so it can grow.

Answer: Plant

The given definition refers to a verb. The same word is also used as a noun, to describe a living organism such as a tree, flower, shrub or bush.

Elephants are herbivores, which means they eat plants.
3. The coloured part of a flower.

Answer: Petal

In a flower, the petals surround the reproductive parts of the plant. Their bright colours are good for attracting pollinators such as bees.

In the wild elephants eat leaves, branches, grasses, flowers, and fruits. In captivity a similar diet is provided.
4. Consume food.

Answer: Eat

Eating refers to the consumption of solid food. Liquid consumption is drinking.

Elephants are particularly fond of eating bananas. It has been found effective to plant banana trees around fields to prevent wild elephants from eating the crops in those fields.
5. The skin or rind of a fruit or vegetable.

Answer: Peel

The word, peel, is also used as a verb, when it means to remove the outer covering of the fruit or vegetable.

Normally an elephant will eat a banana whole, complete with its skin, but some elephants in zoos have learnt to peel the banana before discarding the skin, and scooping up the mushy fruit from within.
6. A place to sit.

Answer: Seat

A seat is a generic term for somewhere to sit. It could be a chair, either a hard wooden one, or a softer upholstered one, for one person. Or it could be an upholstered sofa, or a wooden bench, both of which can seat two, three or more people.

Asian elephants have been trained to carry people in a seat, called a howdah, placed on their backs.
7. A small hardworking insect which lives in a colony.

Answer: Ant

Another word for an ant is an emmet, coming from the Old English 'oemete'.

An elephant is one of the largest animals on earth; an ant is one of the smallest creatures.
8. Description of food which is dry and past its best.

Answer: Stale

The word stale can also be used to refer to something that is no longer interesting, or to a performance which has become boring through repetition.

Some people think that stale buns are a good treat to feed to an elephant. But Jumbo, a famous Victorian elephant, suffered from both tooth decay and obesity after being fed too many sticky buns.
9. Narrative, legend, fable or story.

Answer: Tale

A tale may be fact or fiction. The word is often used with reference to fairy tales, such as those collected by the brothers Grimm.

There have been many stories written about elephants. Some are real life stories such as "Elephant Dawn" by Sharon Pincott, or based on a true story like "An Elephant in the Garden" by Michael Morpurgo. Others are fiction; for example David McKee's Elmer books, and the Babar stories by Jean de Brunhoff and his son, Laurent.
10. An alcoholic beverage traditionally made without hops.

Answer: Ale

Although the words ale and beer are sometimes used interchangeably, ale is just one type of beer. Adam's Ale is non-alcoholic - it is water!

Gerald Durrell wrote a story about an elephant, called Rosie, who had lived in a circus and who was very fond of drinking a bucket of ale. This often had unfortunate consequences for her owner.
