Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Maple

Answer: Type of Syrup

Maple syrup is made by hammering a spout into a sugar maple tree, then catching the sap that drips out for processing. This process is known as "tapping". Tapping maple trees happens in the spring when daytime temperatures rise to above freezing, but nighttime temperatures still fall to below freezing. Once the sap is gathered, it is then heated and the water in the sap is boiled away until the consistency becomes thicker, and a more concentrated sweet flavour results. Most of the maple syrup in the world is gathered in eastern Canada and the northeastern United States. Maple syrup is used as a topping for pancakes, to create candies, and in cooking.
2. Birch

Answer: Type of Syrup

Birch syrup is harvested in the same way as maple syrup, by tapping the trees in the spring and harvesting the sap. The sap is then boiled to evaporate the water, and so that its consistency becomes thicker and the taste becomes sweeter. The flavour of birch syrup has been described as not as sweet as maple syrup. Rather, it has been stated to be more like molasses with a hint of balsamic vinegar. Birch syrup is not typically used for pancakes, but is mainly used to create glazes in cooking, and as a topping for ice cream.
3. Corn

Answer: Type of Syrup

Number 2 yellow dent corn is used to produce corn syrup. Unlike maple and birch syrups, corn syrup requires a chemical process to result in the sweet liquid. The corn is made into corn starch which is then mixed with water and the enzyme α-amylase.

The enzyme breaks down the corn starch and creates a saccharide polymer made of simple sugars. At that point, the enzyme glucoamylase is added to create glucose molecules. Glucose is a type of sugar. The glucose is then transformed into fructose, a sugar found in fruits and vegetables, by mixing it with another enzyme.

A bushel (25 kg; 55 lb) of corn will yield 15.1 kg (33.3lb ) of syrup. Corn syrup is mainly used commercially as a sweetener, a thickener, and to help to maintain moisture in baked goods such as cakes and pastries.
4. Cane

Answer: Type of Syrup

Cane syrup is not very common. It is produced by crushing sugar canes and extracting the juice resulting from that process. The juice is then boiled like maple or birch sap until water in the juice boils away. The resulting syrup is very sweet. It is described as being sweeter than molasses because with molasses, refined sugar is removed. On the other hand, the production of cane syrup involves no removal of refined sugar.

This type of syrup is used as a food sweetener.
5. Lodgepole

Answer: Pine Trees

The lodgepole pine tree (Pinus contorta) grows in western North America. This conifer can grow up to 40 to 50 m (130 to 160 ft) high. The lodgepole pine has thin dark brown bark, yellow-green needles, with cones that are are 3-7 cm (1-3 in) long. The cones are tightly closed and will open when exposed to high heat during a forest fire.

This releases seeds that may grow into new trees after a wildfire. The name "lodgepole pine" comes from Native Americans who harvested the tall, straight trees for use in building their lodges or teepees.

The lodgepole pine is the official tree of the western Canadian province of Alberta.
6. Eastern white

Answer: Pine Trees

The eastern white pine (Pinus strobus) is native to eastern North America from Newfoundland and Labrador west to eastern Manitoba, and south to northern Georgia. This tree was extensively logged from the 1700s to the early part of the 1900s. As a result, it is estimated that only about 1% of the original old-growth eastern white pine forests remained in the early 21st century.

It is common for eastern white pine trees to grow to at least 30.5 m (100 ft), with some growing as tall as 61 m (200 ft). They have been described as the tallest trees in North America. Historically, this tree was used as lumber and as ship masts. Currently, eastern white pine farms grow trees for lumber, for Christmas trees, and for water filtration systems. The eastern white pine is the provincial tree of Ontario, and the state tree of both Maine and Michigan.
7. Mountain

Answer: Pine Trees

The mountain pine (Pinus mugo) is native to high elevations in central and southeastern Europe. This deciduous tree has needles that are 3-7 cm (1.2-2.75 in) long, and cones that are 2.5-5.5 cm (1-2.2 in) long. The multi-stemmed tree grows to about 3-6 metres (10-20 feet) tall in the southern and eastern part of its range.

A single-stemmed variety that grows to 20 m (66 ft) tall can be found in the western part of its range. The mountain pine has few practical uses due to its rather squat appearance, but it is cultivated by garden centres for use in landscaping and ornamental planting in pots.
8. Ponderosa

Answer: Pine Trees

The ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa) is the most widely distributed pine tree in North America. It grows from British Columbia in Canada south through sixteen western states in the US. It has also been introduced in some areas of Europe and New Zealand. The ponderosa pine is a very tall tree. Although most average around 25-30 metres (82-98 feet), some have been discovered in the Pacific Northwest in the US that are about 82.3 metres (270 feet) tall.

The ponderosa pine has a variety of uses. In years past, Native Americans ate the seeds and the inner bark that has a sweet flavour. They also used the wood for building material, and the large trunks for canoes. The wood from older ponderosa pines has also been used for lumber and railway ties by settlers to North America. Younger trees are not used for lumber due to its tendency to warp if harvested early in its growth cycle. The ponderosa pine is the official tree of the state of Montana in the US.
9. Belt

Answer: Fashion Accessories

Belts are worn around the waist and are used to hold up pants and skirts. They can also be used to hold objects such as tools, pagers, gun holsters, coin purses, and cell phones around the waist. Sometimes, belts are decorative as opposed to functional. These include belts that are worn with dresses and jumpsuits where the clothing is held up by hanging from the shoulders. In that case, belts are decorative rather than functional.

Men's belts have been around since the Bronze Age. Since then, they have been used by members of the military, and by both sexes depending on fashion trends. In the current day, leather is the most common material for belts, but some are made of other material such as plastic, suede, canvas, or vinyl. Most belts are held closed with a buckle that is fastened to one end and fitted to the other end with a series of loops or holes. Most belts in the 21st century are quite plain and functional, but some are very fancy, including those that are set with jewels or precious metal buckles.
10. Shawl

Answer: Fashion Accessories

Shawls have been fashion accessories since at least the 14th century. They are usually triangular, square, or rectangular wraps that are worn as an over-garment. The word shawl comes from the Persian word "shal", literally "shawl". Back in the 1300s, rectangular shawls were worn over the shoulders in Persia. From there, the tradition of wearing a shawl spread to Northern Africa and southern Europe. In Ethiopia, traditional rectangular shawls that wrap around the body and over a shoulder are still worn. In the 15th century, embroidered silk shawls became very popular in Spain.

When settlers moved to the New World, they took their traditions with them. This included the Mexican shawl, or serape that many Mexican men have worn since the 1500s. In the 1800s, shawls became more fashionable for women to wear. It was then that triangular or circular shawls were often knit with very intricate lace patterns. Shawls were almost imperative for women in the 19th century because dresses were often thin, and houses were usually poorly heated. In the 21st century, shawls are not very popular in mainstream western culture, but they are still worn in some areas of the world to protect against chilly evenings.
11. Necktie

Answer: Fashion Accessories

The necktie is a fashion accessory typically worn by men who are more formally dressed in a suit, or who are wearing a type of a uniform. Neckties, or ties, are made of silk, wool, cotton, linen, or polyester. The most luxurious is the silk tie. It takes about 100 silkworm cocoons to make one necktie. Neckties are usually tied with a decorative knot at the base of the throat. There are over 175,000 ways to tie that decorative knot!

Ties often have stripe patterns. Ties that are sold in Commonwealth countries typically have stripes that run from the top left to the bottom right. This is because ties in Great Britain originated with military uniforms, and the stripes showed the direction from the heart to the sword. On the other hand, ties that are sold in the US typically have stripes that run from the top right to the bottom left. This was basically a designer's choice back at the beginning of the 20th century. The US company that had started to produce neckties for Americans used this stripe pattern as a way to distinguish their ties from the British ties that were linked to the British military at that time.
12. Suspenders

Answer: Fashion Accessories

Suspenders are also known as braces in some countries. This fashion accessory is used instead of a belt to hold up skirts and pants. Suspenders are straps that attach to the front waistband of the clothes, and are then placed over the shoulders where they form an X or Y shape before being attached to the back waistband. In Britain, suspenders are straps that are worn to hold up stockings. These are known as garters or garter belts in the US.

Modern suspenders have been traced to London haberdasher Albert Thurston in the mid-1800s who popularized them as accessories that were to be worn with the high-waisted skirts and pants that were in style at the time. In the US, Samuel Clemens (aka Mark Twain) received a patent for a pair of suspenders that he called "Adjustable and Detachable Straps for Garments" in 1871. Suspenders remained popular until WWI. At that time, men got used to wearing belts with their uniforms, so many moved away from wearing suspenders. They did remain in use, but started to wane in popularity amongst the general public. By 1938, "Life" magazine reported that 60% of men were choosing to wear belts instead of suspenders. They have remained a fashion accessory through to the current day. Now, they remain an accessory worn daily in some cultures. In others, they are worn with more formal attire.
13. Soup

Answer: Types of Spoons

There are two types of soup spoons - the Western soup spoon and the Chinese soup spoon. Both are used for consuming soups or stews. Western soup spoons have a handle that is about the length of a dessert spoon, but its bowl is larger and more round than a dessert spoon. The bowl is larger than a teaspoon, but fits comfortably in the adult user's mouth. They started to be used around 1900. Before that, tablespoons were used for eating soup, so silverware sets that were made in the 19th century or before do not contain soup spoons. Soup spoons are common in the UK and North America, but are generally not used in continental Europe or many other parts of the world.

The Chinese soup spoon is a decorative porcelain or ceramic one that is used for eating or serving soup. If used for eating, the elongated bowl with deep sides fits into the user's mouth. Their handle is short and thick and extends directly from the bowl of the spoon (as opposed to being a separate part of the utensil). Longer-handled versions with a larger bowl for serving soup also exist. The Chinese soup spoon was used as early as the Shang dynasty of the 2nd millennium BC. There is evidence that they were used more commonly than chopsticks through the 10th century AD.
14. Slotted

Answer: Types of Spoons

Slotted spoons are not used for eating. Instead, they are used when cooking or preparing food. Slotted spoons can be large or small, but all have slots or openings in the bowl. These slots allow solid food to be removed from liquids. This function is similar to a sieve, but with the slotted spoon smaller amounts of food are involved.

For example, a sieve might be used to remove an entire pot of cooked pasta from the cooking water, while a slotted spoon might be used to remove slices of canned fruit or vegetables from the fluid in which they have been preserved.
15. Caviar

Answer: Types of Spoons

Caviar spoons are used when serving the delicacy. Because reactive metals may affect the taste of the caviar, spoons used to serve it are always made of inert materials like animal horn, gold, mother of pearl, and wood. Silver is not used for caviar spoons because it is a reactive metal and may taint the flavour of the caviar.

As a side note, caviar is usually sold in metal tins. In order to ensure that the metal won't taint the flavour, these tins are coated on the inside in a non-reactive material to ensure that the flavour isn't affected during the canning process.
16. Ladle

Answer: Types of Spoons

A ladle is a large spoon that usually has a long handle that runs vertically, or almost vertically from the edge of the bowl of the spoon. Ladles are typically used when preparing or serving stews and soups. Medium-sized ladles can also be used for serving punch, while small ladles can be used for serving sauces, relishes, and gravies. Some ladles have a pinched point built into the bowl on one or both sides that allow one to pour a finer stream of liquid into a cup or bowl.

In Japan, a wooden ladle that is known as a hishaku is used during chozu. Chozu is a ritual that is performed to represent self-purification, and is required before one enters a Japanese temple.
17. Oil

Answer: Words Used to Describe Types of Paint

Oil paint is a type of waterproof paint that is created by mixing pigments in an oil base. The oil is typically linseed oil. Due to its oil base, it cannot be cleaned with water alone, but must be cleaned with solvents, mineral spirits, or soap. Oil paints can be used for artistic purposes, to paint metal structures such as bridges, for painting vehicles such as cars and boats, or to paint walls in and on buildings.

Oil paint is often chosen when durability is a consideration. For example, due to its waterproof nature, oil paint is typically chosen for metal boats and bridges. It is also chosen for walls in high traffic areas, or when it will be painted on walls that are exposed to natural wear due to weather or trees and bushes. The earliest examples of oil paint being used for artistic purposes are murals that are located in Afghanistan that were created in about 650 AD. Oil paints are still used in art in the 21st century.
18. Eggshell

Answer: Words Used to Describe Types of Paint

As wall and ceiling paints dry, they end up with a finish that ranges from high gloss (very shiny and mirror-like) to flat (no shine and chalk-like). Eggshell paint describes the type of finish that has a small amount of sheen to it, but tends towards a flatter appearance, like that of a chicken eggshell.

It is a choice for many when it comes to interior paint because it is washable. It tends to be water-repellent so is often chosen for bathrooms or areas around sinks. Eggshell paint should not be chosen if there are imperfections on the walls that will be painted because it does not hide the imperfections very well.
19. Watercolour

Answer: Words Used to Describe Types of Paint

Watercolour paint is used almost exclusively in artwork. Watercolour paint is made by grinding pigments and mixing them in a water-soluble gum binder. Watercolour paint has been used for many millennia. For example, there are watercolour paintings that that have been discovered in European caves that were completed in the Palaeolithic era.

As it dries, watercolour paint becomes lighter. Studies have shown that the final dried colour is about twice as light as the original wet paint. This should be kept in mind by artists who choose to work with watercolour paints. Famous painters who have used watercolour paint include Georgia O'Keeffe, James McNeill Whistler, Jamie Wyeth, and Winslow Homer among many others.
20. Spray

Answer: Words Used to Describe Types of Paint

Spray paint, otherwise known as aerosol paint, is paint that comes in a pressurized can. The paint is released in a stream when a button or nozzle on the can is depressed and a propellant sends the paint out of the can. Most cans of spray paint have a small metal, glass, or plastic ball inside. The small ball, known as a pea, helps to mix the paint when the can is shaken. Spray paint has been used since the 1950s for a variety of purposes, including crafts and models, construction and surveying, hiking trail blazes, automobile paint touch-ups, and home decor.

Perhaps the most widely known use of spray paint is for graffiti and street art. Artists using it for this purpose often choose spray paint for its vibrant colours, the speed at which it can be applied, its portability, and the speed that it dries. Until recently, graffiti was not recognized as a form of art, but in recent years, it has become more widely respected as a form of artistic expression when those who are doing the painting have the permission of the property owner for their art. However, unauthorized graffiti is considered vandalism in most areas.
