Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In what field was Dame Mary Quant CH DBE FCSD RDI an iconic figure during the 1960s?

Answer: fashion

Mary Quant (1930-2023) was THE fashion designer of London in the 1960s, responsible for popularising the mini skirt, and other fashions that symbolized the spirit of the times. She may or may not have invented the mini skirt, but her line of brightly coloured ones gave them wide acceptance, especially when Twiggy wore them overseas.

In 1966 she wore a mini-length dress when accepting her OBE, one of the earliest of many honours bestowed on her.

3. Bruce Willis announced his retirement from acting in 2022 at 67 after being diagnosed with which illness?

Answer: Aphasia

Aphasia is a devastating illness that causes speech production and processing in the brain to break down. People with aphasia will often be unable to gather intended words, order sentences in the correct way, or understand the speech of others. This makes the job of an actor all but impossible. Bruce Willis has had an illustrious film career and starred in some of the biggest box office hits of the 80s and 90s, with ticket sales between $5-8 billion.

4. With which surname was Judy Garland born?

Answer: Gumm

Judy was born Frances Ethel Gumm. It is not too hard to imagine why she decided to change her name when she started on stage and screen. She and her sisters did start dancing as the Gumms, but a bad audience reaction of laughter was part of the reason she and her siblings changed their name to something more fragrant.

It may have been George Jessel, who performed with the group at the Oriental Theater, who suggested the name change, but after that, a star was born.
