Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Gaydar Radio had its humble beginnings as an internet based radio station with very little technology and a small fan base. With its distinctive style of music it soon became the main station for the gay community. Which other gay radio station did it replace?

Answer: Purple Radio

Purple Radio was launched in 2002 by pop star Boy George. However it started to struggle and was subsequently positioned in the same building as Gaydar Radio. After a while the management teams decided to concentrate on Gaydar Radio which had a more distinctive feel.

Many listeners felt that the music played by Purple Radio wasn't discernible from other more popular radio stations such as Kiss and Ministry of Sound which left it at a disadvantage. Since the moment Purple Radio was shut down, Gaydar Radio went from strength to strength and won many awards along the way.
2. In July 2007, it was discovered that Gaydar actually attracted over 300,000 British listeners per week with many more listening from abroad. During the period that the station's figures steadily increased, where in London was the Gaydar studio based?

Answer: Twickenham

Gaydar Radio broadcasted via the medium of radio to Britain (in particular, London and Brighton) and around the world via the internet. However, the UK government placed a charge on people wishing to listen to stations broadcasting from Britain and this included the Gaydar Radio station.

It is unknown whether or not this has an effect on foreign ratings. It has also been transmitted on a radio channel on Sky TV.
3. The building in which the Gaydar Radio studio was based had a name that is highly amusing in its very irony. What was the name of building?

Answer: Queen's House

The amusement was not just amongst listeners but also extended to the radio presenters themselves, most of whom were gay. The irony stems from the fact that a somewhat derogatory term for a homosexual man is a queen. It has now been adopted by the gay population and is often used jokingly.
4. Gaydar Radio also had its very own nightclub amongst the hustle and bustle of Soho, London. What was the name of this nightclub that could be found in one of London's famous gay hot-spots?

Answer: Profile Bar

Profile Bar was a nightclub found in the west end of London and is actually a part of the City of Westminster. The nightclub itself was used as the studio for the production of many of Gaydar's shows, most notably the drive-time programme hosted by Phil Marriott.
5. January 2008 saw the introduction of presenter Stuart Miles to the midday lineup fronting his own requests show on Gaydar Radio. On what BBC TV programme was Miles regularly seen during the 1990s?

Answer: 'Blue Peter'

'Blue Peter' was a long running children's TV programme that aired on the BBC, (British Broadcasting Corporation), which also had many of their own radio stations. These included the imaginatively named - Radio 1, Radio 2 and Radio 3!

Stuart Miles presented a programme with a theme that is a common feature across all sorts of broadcasting radio stations of any genre. It was a requests based show which invited listeners to contact the station and to request their favourite tracks.
6. Towards the end of 2007, Gaydar Radio introduced the 'Jukebox' which allowed listeners to not just listen to the music but to buy the music. During the launch of this Saturday afternoon show, what was the main genre of music being played?

Answer: House

The genre of house music, one of my personal favourite genres, is characterised by its prominent beat and its inclusion of electronic effects. The show itself was broadcast live from the Gaydar studios on a Saturday and was presented by Alex Baker at the start of 2008.

The show, as has been said, encouraged listeners to buy the music that they may have enjoyed listening to. This could have been done on their website which was revamped in 2007 and combined with the Gaydar Nation website. This was where it was also possible to find the station's live internet feed.
7. By 2007, Gaydar Radio had racked up some of the most prestigious awards in British radio. Gaydar won the award for 'Digital Terrestrial Station of the Year,' at which of the following ceremonies?

Answer: Sony Awards

As well as winning the Sony award for 'Digital Terrestrial Station of the Year' in 2007, it also won an award at the BT Music awards in 2006. Gaydar Radio picked up the award for 'Best Radio Station,' probably the most coveted award given at that particular ceremony. Gaydar Radio has also had a mention in the long-standing and highly recognised Radio Times magazine.
8. Richard Newman who described himself as a "sexual terrorist," originally studied communications and broadcasting in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Before joining Gaydar Radio, which of the following reality TV shows did he appear in?

Answer: Big Brother

Richard Newman didn't win the competition but gained a subsequent place on the weekend line-up at Gaydar Radio shortly after he was evicted from the Big Brother house. He and a fellow contestant, Lea Walker, collaborated to form a Sunday programme on Gaydar called,'The Dicky and Dolly Show.' This very camp output was in essence a chat show talking about gay UK and what they and listeners had been up to over the week.
9. Which of the following were the owners of Gaydar Nation when the website amalgamated with the Gaydar Radio station?

Answer: QSoft

QSoft Consulting Limited were the owners of the entire Gaydar Nation project which included the Gaydar Radio station itself. The BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation) owned many different radio stations, most of which were specialised such that Radio 3 was for classical music and so on. GMG (Guardian Media Group) Radio owned such radio stations as Real Radio and Smooth Radio which both had bases across the UK. GCap Media owned many popular British radio stations such as the national Classic FM and various other regional broadcasting centres.
10. The first ever station director of Gaydar Radio, Jamie Crick, was also a DJ on the station. He was also a DJ on which of the following national radio stations?

Answer: Classic FM

Classic FM was a British national radio station that played classical and jazz music 24 hours a day. It had such presenters as Simon Bates of BBC Radio fame and Lesley Garrett a popular soprano singer.
Jamie Crick had presented the Classic FM 'Early Breakfast' show and the 'Most Wanted' show which was broadcast live from the station at weekday lunchtimes.
