Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
Answer:

The Pirates of the Caribbean attraction at the Walt Disney theme parks originated as a dark ride (a ride where you get into a moving cart and ride along through a darkened space filled with oft-moving props) in 1967 when it opened as part of New Orleans Square in California's Disneyland; it didn't actually become part of the Magic Kingdom in Walt Disney World until five years later when it appeared in Adventureland. All versions of the ride found around the world (because it is in other Disney parks) send the rider through pirate environs while the song "A Pirate's Life for Me" plays throughout. Think about the ride like "It's a Small World", but with more seafaring.

The ride is an important one in the Disney space because it was one of the last ones seen through by Walt Disney himself; he would pass away a few months after its opening. And the story would have probably ended for the ride there. One of the only major attractions to be completely unaffiliated with a feature film in the Disney canon, it managed to be part of pop culture's mixing pot even without. The track "A Pirate's Life for Me", written by frequent Disney composer George Bruns, would transcend the ride, being an immensely catchy shanty with an easy-to-earworm hook or two.

Naturally things turned around for the ride in 2003 with the release of "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl", the live-action pirate film featuring Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow, which made money hand-over-fist. The movie was popular enough to warrant trilogy treatment (with "Dead Man's Chest" and "At World's End")... and then more movies to follow. Depp would appear in the first five and the series would become one of the most profitable in cinema history. The first film in the series would feature "A Pirate's Life for Me" a few times; Sparrow would sing it at the very end, having reclaimed his ship, as the movie headed into its end credits. In the 2000s, the original ride would be updated to include a likeness of Depp's character locked away in a prison cell.
