Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Magic Kingdom: What is unusual about most of the books in the library?

Answer: They are actually painted images.

Except for the few books that are being "moved by ghostly hands", all of the shelves, paneling, and books in the library are actually paintings on a canvas. This is not noticeable at all in the gloom and darkness of the ride.
2. Magic Kingdom: What is the grill in front of the foyer fireplace shaped like?

Answer: A bat

Yet another of the intricate little details that makes the Mansion such a special attraction.
3. Disneyland: Which of the following was an actual idea for the proposed but ultimately abandoned "Museum of the Weird" concept?

Answer: A haunted gypsy wagon

The "Museum of the Weird" was originally supposed to be placed at the exit of the Haunted Mansion. It was intended to be a showcase of odd and unusual items that the Disney Imagineers cooked up.

A pirate wax museum was going to be located where Pirates of the Caribbean now is. With the advent of audio-animatronics, it was decided to use this new technology to make the pirates fully animated figures in a elaborate boat ride. The rest is history.
4. All Mansions: What classic movie did Candy Candido, the actor who supplies the voice of the diminutive prisoner in the graveyard, play a small but memorable part in?

Answer: The Wizard of Oz

He is the voice of the angry apple tree. "Are you saying my apples ain't what they ought to be?"
5. Magic Kingdom: Finish this epithet which graces one of the tombstones in the graveyard outside: "Rest in peace cousin Huet, we all know ___ _____ __ __."

Answer: you didn't do it

He was framed!
6. Disneyland: What was the name of the Haunted Mansion going to be at one point early in its development?

Answer: Bloodmere Manor

At first, it was called simply "The Haunted House." But as the attraction evolved a storyline was added. The story dealt with a family with the surname of Bloodstone who all died horrible deaths in the Mansion and still haunt the place. Hence the new name of "Bloodstone Manor." The Bloodstone family theme was eventually dropped however, the name was changed into the "Haunted Mansion", all storylines were excised, and the attraction became simply a retirement home for old ghosts.
7. Phantom Manor: What feature does the Séance Room at Phantom Manor have that none of the other parks possess?

Answer: Windows through which thunderclouds can be seen

It makes the Séance Room quite ominous and eerie.
8. All Mansions: Eleanor Audley did more work for Disney besides voicing Madame Leota. Which of the following animated Disney villains did she lend her vocal talents to?

Answer: Maleficent from Sleeping Beauty

The talented Mrs. Audley also portrayed the evil Lady Tremaine in Walt Disney's Cinderella. By the way, the *face* of Madame Leota is not Audley. The lady who provided that service was Leota Toombs, one of the imagineers who worked on the attraction. Fitting last name, isn't it?
9. Disneyland: The Haunted Mansion had to be closed and drastically changed because an elderly guest suffered a fatal heart attack on the attractions first day of operation.

Answer: False

This is one of the most persistent rumors associated with the Haunted Mansion. It is entirely false.
10. Magic Kingdom: What supernatural sound can be heard while waiting in line during the day, and what other scary sound might you hear while in line at night?

Answer: Wolf howl during the day, thunder at night

The wolf can be seen as well as heard inside the attraction. He is to be found on a small hill just to the right of the phantom band in the graveyard.
11. All Mansions: Who wrote the lyrics to the Haunted Mansion theme song "Grim Grinning Ghosts?"

Answer: Xavier Atencio

'Grim Grinning Ghosts' is one of the greatest Disney anthems ever. It was expertly written by Disney imagineer Xavier Atencio. Buddy Baker was the man who composed the music for 'Grim Grinning Ghosts'.
12. All Mansions: What are the King and Queen in the graveyard using as a makeshift teeter-totter?

Answer: A wooden board they've placed over a tombstone

You have to make do with what you've got.

Other recreational activities going on in the graveyard: Bicycle riding, tea party, swinging, and of course singing.
13. Phantom Manor: Which of the following appears in the Endless Hallway?

Answer: The Bride

The Bride is a key figure in the Phantom Manor storyline. The other Mansions do not have a set storyline. Also, their Endless Hallways contains a floating candelabra instead of The Bride.
14. All Mansions: A scene from what movie inspired the "breathing" door effect in the Corridor of Doors?

Answer: The Haunting

The Haunting was, in turn, based on the book "The Haunting of Hill House" by Shirley Jackson.
15. Phantom Manor: Who is the voice of the mayor of Thunder Mesa?

Answer: Paul Frees

The mayor's dialog is cobbled together from bits and pieces of Paul's narration from the Haunted Mansion.
16. All Mansions: Walt Disney's face is used for one of the singing busts in the graveyard.

Answer: False

Another common but completely untrue rumor that has circulated about the Mansion. The face actually belongs to Thurl Ravenscroft, who has done a lot of work for the Disney company.
17. All Mansions: What is the corpse in the Conservatory coffin screaming out?

Answer: "Let me out of here!"

Poor guy, he can hardly contain himself. The voice of the pleading coffin dweller is provided by X. Atencio.
18. All Mansions: Finish this lyric from Grim Grinning Ghosts: "If you would like to join our jamboree, there's a simple rule that's __________."

Answer: compulsory

These lyrics are played very softly as you exit the Mansion to the outside. Here is the rest: "Mortals pay a token fee, so rest in peace the hauntings free. So hurry back we would like your company."
19. Magic Kingdom: In the Sinister Eleven Portrait Gallery, one of the portraits depicts a sorceress holding a cat. In the upper right corner is a yellow circle with many strange words written on it in interlocking circles. What do the words mean?

Answer: The circle is a calendar and the words are the abbreviated names of Wiccan holidays.

If you answered this one correctly, you are a true Mansion fanatic!
20. All Mansions: In the Grand Ballroom, the ghost of which famous historical personage can be seen sitting at the dining table?

Answer: Julius Caesar

Great Caesar's Ghost! Cleopatra does appear in the ballroom room, but she is sitting on the chandelier, not at the table. The quiz is now over. I hope you enjoyed playing. Sleep well. And remember: there are 999 happy haunts in the Haunted Mansion, but there's always room for one more...
