Answer: Rocky Balboa

Released in 1976 and starring Sylvester Stallone, "Rocky" was an almost-immediate classic, receiving great acclaim at its debut and leading the film to nine Oscar nominations including wins for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Film Editing. Stallone starred as the titular fighter, Rocky Balboa, whose journey through the film sees him training for the world heavyweight championship against Apollo Creed, played in the film by Carl Weathers.

It ended up being the top-grossing film of 1976 and was followed by numerous sequels (including a spin-off series about Creed's son).

Answer: Mortal Kombat

The first "Mortal Kombat" game released in 1992 and, with it, the world was introduced to a roster of seven initial fighters including Johnny Cage, Kano, Liu Kang, Raiden, Scorpion, Sonya Blade, and Sub-Zero. Johnny Cage persisted through the series and several of the movies in the quick-to-be-made film series based on the games and, in each case, he was created to be a Hollywood action star brought into the fray to legitimize his stunt career.

As it turns out, he's one of the perfect candidates to help protect the Earthrealm.

Recorded by Simon & Garfunkel and released on their final album, "Bridge over Troubled Water", in 1970, "The Boxer" is one of a handful of their signature folk tunes. Reaching number seven on the Billboard Hot 100, "The Boxer's" lyrics move from a first-person tale to the third-person story of a boxer.

Answer: Rock 'Em Sock 'Em Robots

First sold in 1964, the Rock 'Em Sock 'Em Robots featured two fighters in a toy boxing ring. Secured into the base, the toy is operated by two people, each operating the fists of the robots through a joystick. The winner of the fight is the one whose fists connect enough to knock the head off the opponent.

The toy was quite popular upon its initial release and it was remade in the 2000s by Mattel, who collected the trademark after original creators Louis Marx and Company liquidated in the early 1980s.

Answer: Fight Club

In both the 1996 novel by Chuck Palahniuk and the 1999 film directed by David Fincher, an unnamed protagonist meets Tyler Durden after falling into circumstances that lead the two of them to create a Fight Club, a gathering in which men can fist-fight each other with consent, letting off steam while creating something bigger and more nefarious.

In both the novel and the film, as it turned out, Durden never existed; he was a figment of the main character's troubled imagination. In the movie, Durden's role was played by Brad Pitt.

Answer: Mark Wahlberg

Directed by David O. Russell, "The Fighter" was an Oscar-nominated 2010 film starring an ensemble cast including Mark Wahlberg, Christian Bale, Amy Adams, and Melissa Leo. Based on the true story of boxing half-brothers Micky Ward and Dicky Eklund, the film even uses the earlier-made HBO documentary "High on Crack Street: Lost Lives in Lowell" as a plot point, following the Ward-Eklund story in the years to follow, chronicling Ward's later successes in the welterweight championship.

While Bale took the Best Supporting Actor Oscar, co-star Melissa Leo also won for Best Supporting Actress in the same year.

Answer: Liu Kang

Liu Kang is a "Mortal Kombat" character, not "Street Fighter", but all of these characters come from the same area of 2D arcade-style fighting video games. Ken, Ryu, and Blanka are all featured characters in "Street Fighter", a series started by Capcom in 1987. Only Ken and Ryu were playable in the first game in the series; Sagat started out as an opponent (and the game's final boss).

The game functions similar to "Mortal Kombat" in the sense that the player moves from fight to fight facing off against opponents with different fighting styles.

Answer: Dragon Ball

The World Martial Arts Tournament appears as early as "Dragon Ball's" second official arc, originally broadcast in Japan in 1986 (and dubbed for North America airing in 2001). What these competitions tend to do in the show is pit the main characters-- or at least the main fighters-- against each other in the ring to show off their true powers, often to dramatic effect.

The first time Goku attended, he ended up transforming into a Great Ape under the full moon midway through the final battle against Master Roshi.

It led Roshi to blast the moon with a Kamehameha and, eventually, win the tournament. In the proceeding tournament, five arcs later, key character Tien Shinhan was the main antagonist.

Answer: UFC

Born in the Bahamas, Kimbo Slice was raised in Florida and, in 2003, started pursuing a pastime and, eventually, a career in internet street fighting that led to him getting picked up to be a professional fighter. Two years later he would start receiving training in mixed martial arts eventually becoming a light heavyweight and a heavyweight in the Ultimate Fighting Championship.

His track record, before his unexpected death in 2016, was stellar; he had an unblemished track record as a professional boxer and a fairly modest win rate in MMA.

Answer: Punch-Out!!

Formerly known by the name "Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!!", "Punch-Out!!" took on a more generic name as it persisted as a series in the NES/arcade era and eventually saw a revival on the Nintendo Wii, when players could use the Wii Remote/Nunchuck motion controls to strike in real time.

The series features protagonist Little Mac as he fights his way up through the ranks in the roster of the World Video Boxing Association. Originally, the final boss was Mike Tyson; when the license to use his likeness expired, they replaced him with a character named Mr. Dream. Little Mac would eventually become a character in the "Super Smash Bros." series.
