Thematic People in Entertainment Trivia Questions

1. Created by author Baroness Emmuska Orczy, the first book to feature the Scarlet Pimpernel, named "The Scarlet Pimpernel", created the typical role of a hero who disguises himself with an alter ego. But what is his real name?

From Quiz
The Many Faces of the Scarlet Pimpernel

Answer: Sir Percy Blakeney

In Baroness Orczy's series, Sir Percy Blakeney keeps up the appearances of a dimwitted fop to all his acquaintances--including, at first, his wife--except a select group of others, known as the League of the Scarlet Pimpernel. In reality, he is, of course, the Scarlet Pimpernel himself; under this alias, he dons a variety of disguises to rescue innocent French from the Guillotine that dominated the politics of the French Revolution in the 1790s. Baroness Orczy published this first book in 1905, and it was an immediate hit. Her character is considered to have been the first hero to follow this typical double life.

2. Who faced off against Apollo Creed for the world heavyweight championship in a 1976 film?

From Quiz He Who Fights

Answer: Rocky Balboa

Released in 1976 and starring Sylvester Stallone, "Rocky" was an almost-immediate classic, receiving great acclaim at its debut and leading the film to nine Oscar nominations including wins for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Film Editing. Stallone starred as the titular fighter, Rocky Balboa, whose journey through the film sees him training for the world heavyweight championship against Apollo Creed, played in the film by Carl Weathers. It ended up being the top-grossing film of 1976 and was followed by numerous sequels (including a spin-off series about Creed's son).

3. The first incarnation of Sherlock Holmes ended in 1891, when he faced his greatest enemy, Professor Moriarty, and lost his life in the process. But where did Holmes and Moriarty meet their doom?

From Quiz The Many Faces of Sherlock Holmes

Answer: Reichenbach Falls

Reichenbach Falls in Switzerland was where Holmes and Moriarty had their final duel. In their struggle, both plunged into the waterfall and presumably died. Conan Doyle had originally killed Holmes in this event, described in the 1893 story "The Final Problem", but the public outcry at Holmes' death was so great that it convinced him to find a way to bring Holmes back to the world.

4. Robin Hood, a hero of English folklore, was first referenced in literature in the late 14th century. In which famous poem, in which the narrator dreams of an ideal life, did Robin Hood make his first literary bow?

From Quiz The Many Faces of Robin Hood

Answer: Piers Plowman

"Piers Plowman", also known as "Visio Willelmi de Petro Ploughman", was written by William Langland possibly between 1370 and 1386. In it, the narrator ("William") dreams of a quest for the true Christian life, including Piers Plowman, "a people's Christ". It is in this poem that the legend of Robin Hood is first referenced. After this first mention, several other mentions of Robin Hood begin to appear, including one from the late 14th century in which he is featured in the proverb "many men speak of Robin Hood and never shot his bow". The first actual record of Robin Hood's legend, however, comes from the late 15th or early 16th century. Although Friar Tuck and Maid Marion are not yet mentioned in these stories, many other familiar faces in Robin Hood's legends, such as the Sheriff of Nottingham and Little John, play prominent roles. The earliest of these written legends that still survives is the story "Robin Hood and the Monk", written sometime after 1450.

5. What is Lurch's infamous catchphrase?

From Quiz "Addams Family" Characters: Lurch

Answer: "You rang?"

Lurch is mostly a silent character and he was intended to be so. However Ted Cassidy who plays Lurch in the 1960s TV series, ad libbed the line "you rang?" and it became a staple from that point forward. Although the line is considered iconic, Lurch does not always say it in some adaptations, especially since he is completely silent in some of them. When Lurch does speak, he usually speaks in simple sentences or just one or two words at a time.

8. Wednesday Addams typically wears her hair in which style?

From Quiz "Addams Family" Characters: Wednesday

Answer: Pigtails

Wednesday is almost always seen wearing pigtails. Six-year old Wednesday wore pigtails in the original television series as did teenage Wednesday in her other appearances. In the 2019 animated film, Wednesday's pigtails come to an end in a noose shape. A notable exception, however, is the Broadway musical where Wednesday is 18 years old. During a coming of age ceremony at the beginning of the musical, Wednesday cuts off her pigtails in favor of a more mature, shorter haircut. This scene is often cut for time in off Broadway productions.

From Quiz "Addams Family" Characters: Gomez

Gomez has long had Latin characteristics about him. When the original TV series was created, John Astin suggested that Gomez have Castilian blood to match Astin's own heritage. Since then Gomez has been portrayed by a number of notable Hispanic actors (such as Raul Julia and Oscar Isaac) and is typically shown to be a stereotypical Latin lover. In addition to having Spanish blood, it appears the Addamses are also part Eastern European given the vague insights into their culture, family history and clothing.

11. India Wilkes is the daughter of John Wilkes and the cousin and sister in law of Melanie Hamilton in what popular novel?

From Quiz Country Folk (Part 4): Folks in Fiction

Answer: Gone with the Wind

Mary Alicia Rhett (1915-2014) played India Wilkes in the movie adaptation. In the book and film, she is also the sister of Ashley Wilkes, whom Scarlett O'Hara was in love with. In the novel she makes her first appearance in the year 1861, at a barbecue held on the estate of Twelve Oaks. She's a bit on the despicable side which comes out when her rivalry with Scarlett heats up since both women are in love with Ashley. The country of India had their own Civil War back in 1558 A.D. Known as The Mughal-Rajput Wars, the Rajput Confederacy fought a series of battles against the Mughal Empire which began when the Timurid ruler Babur invaded northwestern India. Rana Sanga, the leader of the Rajput confederacy put up a resistance to the incursion.

12. The original UK version of 'Shameless' is centred around a working-class Manchester family who live on the fictional Chatsworth estate. What is the family's surname? Hint: they share it with a pair of real life Mancunian musicians.

From Quiz Fictional Mancs and Scousers

14. In what 1993 movie were Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy known as The Sanderson Sisters, native to Salem, Massachusetts?

From Quiz Black Magic Woman

Answer: Hocus Pocus

Produced by Disney, "Hocus Pocus" became a cult classic over the years thanks in part to the darkly humorous performances of the three witches, brought back to life by the lighting of the black flame candle in a Salem Museum, formerly their house. What followed was a harrowing Halloween involving a talking cat, a Frankenstein-zombie creature named Billy, a hypnotic trance at a dance, and a race to sunrise. Bette Midler's character was such a hit with fans that she started wearing the costume to perform her rendition of "I've Put a Spell On You" at live shows.

15. Which literary sleuth can most often be found at 221B Baker Street?

From Quiz Addresses of the Fictional and Famous

Answer: Sherlock Holmes

Undoubtedly one of the most famous and popular literary detectives, Sherlock Holmes makes his home in London's 221B Baker Street, occasionally with his associate, Dr John Watson, but most of the time with his long-suffering landlady, Mrs Hudson. The enduring address has appeared in pretty much all adaptations of Conan Doyle's stories and the real-life site in London was rewarded with a blue plaque (for historical or cultural importance) in 1990.

16. The British boy band Wham! had two members. George Michael went on to have a successful solo career, but who was his less successful sidekick?

From Quiz Me & You Versus the World

Answer: Andrew Ridgeley

Andrew Ridgeley met George Michael - or Georgios Kyriacos Panayiotou, as he was then known - at school in Hertfordshire. Following the demise of the ska band they were in, the Executive, the two formed Wham! and had several hits, including 'Everything She Wants', 'Wake Me Up Before You Go Go', and 'Club Tropicana'. Wham! split after Michael decided he wanted to go in a more mature musical direction. Ridgeley tried his hand at both acting and Formula 3 racing, with little success, and only released one solo album, 'Son of Albert'. For a time, he was in a relationship with Keren Woodward, formerly of Bananarama.

17. Victor Hugo's Quasimodo was known as the hunchback of which Parisian location?

From Quiz Got a Hunch?

Answer: Notre-Dame Cathedral

"The Hunchback of Notre Dame", released in 1831, was one of Victor Hugo's famous French works (though he was much more celebrated for "Les Misérables"). In it, the tragic hunchback Quasimodo falls in love with the beautiful gypsy dancer Esmeralda but he finds himself in competition with his own master, Monseigneur Claude Frollo, for her affections. The original book is horribly tragic while the Disney cartoon version, released in 1996 (with Tom Hulce as Quasimodo), kind of sidesteps the latter half of the original story in favor of a more upbeat ending for kids.

18. Chuck Noland is stranded on a deserted island after his plane crashes. He creates a friend with a volleyball with which he had conversations and even fights with. What was the name of his little friend?

From Quiz Say Hello to my Little Friend!

Answer: Wilson

Chuck Noland's little friend is a volleyball which he finds in a "FedEx" package. Chuck names the volleyball "Wilson" after its brand name. Chuck is devastated when Wilson gets loose from a raft while he is asleep. He awaken to see Wilson floating away. These two are in the movie "Castaway".

19. In 2010, as a comic strip, he appeared in over 1900 newspapers worldwide. He has a red beard, a horned helmet and a son named Hamlet, who is he?

From Quiz Fictional Flaming Redheads Redux

Answer: Hagar the Horrible

Created by Dik Browne, Hagar is a dig at Scandinavian life during the Viking Age. Appearing overweight and scruffy, Hagar looks more like a caveman than a Viking and whilst he may be a fierce warrior he is also a family man with a soft underbelly. He is supported (bossed if the truth be known) by his large framed wife Helga and his highly intelligent son Hamlet. The name Hagar the Horrible is an adaptation of Dik Browne's nickname, bestowed upon him by his sons, of Hagar the Terrible. This question was created by Phoenix Rising team member pollucci19.

20. What Looney Tunes character is known for his "Ooooooh" red hair and red moustache?

From Quiz Fictional Flaming Redheads

Answer: Yosemite Sam

The character Yosemite Sam first appeared in the cartoon "Hare Trigger" as an adversary to Bugs Bunny in 1945. He has appeared in various Looney Tunes cartoons in many roles such as a Pirate, Indian chief, Viking and Guard Captain. One of his notable appearances was in the 1996 movie "Space Jam" alongside many other Looney Tunes characters. The "Pulp Fiction" parody scene here is one of my favourites with Yosemite Sam and Elmer Fudd replete in black and white attire supported by music from the "Pulp Fiction" soundtrack. This question was created by Phoenix Rising team member zonko.

21. Everyone knows that the Batman's secret identity is Bruce Wayne, and it was mentioned frequently on the TV show, in the films, and the comic books. Rarely mentioned on the TV and radio programs, what is the secret identity of the Lone Ranger?

From Quiz Won't You Guess My Name?

Answer: John Reid

In the original radio series which began in on WXYZ in Detroit in 1933, the Lone Ranger's last name was revealed as Reid, but a first name was never given. The program ran nationally on the Mutual Broadcasting System, then in 1942 by NBC Blue (which became ABC) until 1956, during which time Brace Beemer was the Lone Ranger and John Todd played Tonto. In 1938, the first film serial appeared in U.S. cinemas; a second in 1939. On TV (1949-57), Clayton Moore famously played the masked hero and Jay Silverheels the sidekick. Not until 1981, however, in the movie "The Legend of Lone Ranger", do we learn his first name is John. Subsequent comic-book and film adaptations have used that name. Interestingly, the Lone Ranger's nephew, another sidekick in the radio series, was named Dan Reid, Jr. (son of Dan Reid, Sr., John' brother). The creators of the Lone Ranger, George W. Trendle and Fran Striker, created the Green Hornet franchise, they made Britt Reid, the secret identity of the hero, the son of Dan Reid, and hence the grand-nephew of the Lone Ranger!

22. "The Muppet Show" is identified mainly by fictional characters Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy but who were the pair of crotchety but dapper old men who appeared as the balcony hecklers?

From Quiz Entertaining Twosomes

Answer: Statler and Waldorf

"The Muppet Show" was a 1970s comedy show produced by puppeteer Jim Henson and was known for slapstick comedy and humorous parodies. 23. "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance" is the title of a song and a movie. According to the movie, who fired a shot at Liberty Valance?

From Quiz Anonymous Title Characters

Answer: Senator Ransom Stoddard

The song by Gene Pitney did not mention the name of the shooter. It was composed for the soundtrack to the movie, but director John Ford scrapped it. In the 1962 movie, Senator Stoddard (James Stewart) comes to a small village named Shinbone, to attend the funeral of his old friend Tom Doniphon (John Wayne). The Senator tells his story to a journalist: when he first came to Shinbone, the outlaw Liberty Valance terrorized the settlement and robbed the stagecoach with which Stoppard arrived. After Valance set fire to the newspaper office, Stoppard (meanwhile appointed to Deputy Sheriff) challenged him to a shootout. Lt. John Dunbar was the main character in Kevin Costner's movie "Dances With Wolves" (1990). Lt. Pete Mitchell, call name "Maverick", was the male lead in "Top Gun" (1986). He was portrayed by Tom Cruise. Richard Gere played the role of Zack Mayo, who wanted to become "An Officer and a Gentleman" (1982). Tom Doniphon shot Liberty Valance. He shot at the same time as Stoddard, from an alley, but it was his bullet that killed Valance, as Stoddard's bullet missed.

24. One of the most famous sidekicks, and one of the first, was one John H. Watson. Watson was a Doctor and veteran of the British Army. How did he meet his friend, Sherlock Holmes?

From Quiz You Don't Really Kick Them in the Side

Answer: Introduced by a mutual friend

They were introduced by a character named Stamford. Holmes was looking to share the rent with someone so he could move into 221B Baker Street. In one author's words, "he was a catalyst for Holmes' mental processes".

25. Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy worked together in a long and hilarious partnership making over one hundred films together. Such was their fame that an international fraternal organisation was set up in 1965 to honour them. What is its name?

From Quiz Put Her There, Partner!

Answer: Sons of the Desert

Stan Laurel was still alive when this organisation was funded, but Oliver Hardy had died several years earlier. Stan good-naturedly edited the constitution of the new organisation, suggesting that members wear a fez and carry the motto "Two Minds without a Single Thought". Stan Laurel (1890-1965) and Oliver Hardy (1892-1957) first worked together on the screen in 1921, and made their last film, with their partnership still intact, in 1950, shortly before both retired. Stan wrote much of the dialogue and gags for their movies and eventually became the team's head writer. He was the brains of the business, in spite of the less than intelligent character he usually played. They were absolutely hilarious together, a perfect partnership and friendship, which endured until their separation by death. Their films are considered classics of comedy. One fact that always makes me smile is that for most of their scenes together, Stan had to avoid looking at Oliver directly. Why? Because even looking at his jolly tubby friend at times was enough to see Stan drop out of character and become helpless with laughter. And that's just what this wonderful pair gave to the world for so long - the precious gift of laughter.

29. In the world of the theatre, a pair of masks have come to represent drama. They are commonly referred to as 'the comedy tragedy masks' with one mask smiling and the other sad. Which two Greek Muses do they represent?

From Quiz I Never Remember Faces

Answer: Thalia and Melpomene

The only Muse not mentioned in the options above is Polyhymnia. Thalia was the Muse of Comedy and idyllic poetry, while Melpomene was the Muse of Tragedy, although she was originally the Muse of Singing. Their emblems are, respectively, the comedy mask and the tragedy mask. Early Greek theatre used the theatre mask to help convey emotion to open air audiences, and to help in playing multiple roles. As nearly all Greek theatre could be categorized as either comedies or tragedies, those two masks dominated and came to represent theatre and drama in general.

After Hamlet killed her father, and without her mother to guide her, Ophelia had no way to resolve this inner conflict and grief... other than, of course, to end it all by drowning herself.
