One of the oldest cosmetics companies in the world, Shiseido was founded in 1872. While the company began as a pharmacy, it began to branch into other enterprises, eventually including makeup (face powder) in 1917. Over the next 100 plus years, it grew into the multinational cosmetics giant that it is today.
Chanel was established by Coco Chanel in 1910, with its beginnings from a humble millinery shop in Paris. Clothing lines were established early on, and the first perfume was developed in 1921. The original trademark for the company included cosmetics in the described lineup of products in the mid-1920s.
Guccio Gucci founded Gucci in 1921 as a luggage business, and slowly expanded to other products over time, first to clothing and fashion accessories, then eventually fragrances in the mid-1970s. Cosmetics soon followed, and Gucci Beauty is now a standard in the industry.
Estée Lauder began producing cosmetics in 1946 with her husband, eventually growing to become the second-largest cosmetics company in the world. And to think, when they started they only had four products: Cleansing oil, skin lotion, super rich all-purpose creme, and creme pack.
French fashion designer Christian Dior established DIOR in 1946 with an original fashion lineup released in 1947, and perfumes added shortly thereafter. In 1969, a cosmetics line was added to the business model, and has been going strong ever since, long since its own Division in the company.
Yves Saint Laurent (aka YSL) founded his fashion label in 1962, launched his first fragrance in 1964, with a full cosmetics line finally established in 1978.
Giorgio Armani founded his luxury fashion house in 1975 with partner Sergio Galeotti. While cosmetics are included under the Armani name, the primary license for cosmetics is through the L'Oréal line, in a partnership made in 1980.
NARS Cosmetics was established in 1994 by François Nars, starting out with a line of 12 lipsticks. Since then, it has grown to a full cosmetics and skin care line, under the ownership of Shiseido since the year 2000.
Luxury beauty brand Chantecaille was founded by Sylvie Chantecaille in 1997, originally as a niche French fragrance house. A year later, with the help of her daughters, the brand expanded to botanically-based skin care that has found its place in the modern world of cosmetics.
The Stila line of cosmetics was established in 1994 by Jeanine Lobell, and was so popular that she was convinced to sell to Estée Lauder in 1999. Since then, Stila has been acquired by other companies, but the products still carry the original name, and are highly sought after for their quality.
Smashbox Studios was founded as a photography studio in 1990, and then launched their first cosmetics line in 1996, designed to appeal to the camera. Today, the brand is known for being Vegan-friendly and cruelty-free.
After starting out with Gucci, Tom Ford launched his own endeavour with Domenico de Sole in the form of a cosmetics line in 2004, and shortly afterwards joined forces with Estee Lauder for another line of cosmetics. By the year 2017, Tom Ford Beauty had achieved an estimated one billion dollars in sales.
Fashion magazine makeup artist Kirsten Kjaer Weis launched her eponymous line in 2010, an organic, luxury beauty brand focused on high performance products made with natural ingredients.
Charlotte Tilbury Beauty Ltd. was established in 2013 in London, England with a collection of 200 products, building off of her YouTube channel success in 2012. The products found great success, and are now sought in over 70 countries around the world.
Patricia "Pat" McGrath made a name for herself in the cosmetics industry when she was hired by Giorgio Armani to collaborate on a new line of cosmetics. After spending a decade with Proctor & Gamble as Global Cosmetics Creative Design Director, she started her own line appropriately called Pat McGrath Labs.
Alexander McQueen, Balenciaga, Bottega Veneta, Louis Vuitton, and Moncler are all companies that only offer clothing lines and fashion accessories, but not cosmetics.
