Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. We start our day at school in the USA with the Pledge of Allegiance. How many stars are on the United States Flag?

Answer: 50

The 50 stars represent the 50 states that belong to the USA. The flag also has 13 stripes which stand for the 13 original colonies.
2. "Get out your math books," our teacher directs. Which of the four math operations would use renaming (sometimes called borrowing)?

Answer: Subtraction

Renaming is taking 1 away from a column and adding 10 to the column to the right. Addition and multiplication both involve carrying - adding numbers onto the next column.
3. Our spelling list this week features words with the long e sound. What is the correct way to spell the term for a person who steals things?

Answer: thief

Phonics rules will help you remember the correct spelling of many words. One example is "I before e, except after c."
4. Whew, who is ready for morning recess? In which of these games would you have to tag people and then guard them to make sure they aren't set free?

Answer: freeze tag

Freeze tag is a more challenging type of tag. Because players can be set free after being tagged, it takes much longer to catch and freeze everyone.
5. Next up, American history. What explorer is credited with discovering America in 1492?

Answer: Christopher Columbus

All four of these men were famous explorers. Magellan was the first person to sail around the world, and Amerigo Vespucci is the man that America was named for.
6. Our class is reading a novel for literature class. What book features a young girl whose family moves to the American frontier to live?

Answer: Little House on the Prairie

The best way to improve as a reader is simply to read, read, read. Thankfully, lunch is coming up. My brain is getting tired!
7. Lunchtime! What messy noodle dish with red sauce is being served in the cafeteria today?

Answer: Spaghetti Bolognese

Spaghetti noodles are long and thin. They are usually covered with a tomato-based sauce and often served with meatballs.
8. Commas are the subject of the day in English class. A comma is NOT needed in which of the following places?

Answer: After the subject of a sentence

Commas should be used after the greeting and closing of a letter. They can also be used to separate the day from the year when writing a date.
9. The entire class cheers when the teacher brings out the items for the next class! Which object is used in science to make small objects look larger?

Answer: Microscope

The word "microscope" comes from two Greek words meaning "small" and "to look or see". A microscope allows the user to see things that are invisible to the naked eye otherwise.
10. Our final class for today is P.E. What do the letters P.E. stand for?

Answer: Physical Education

P.E. can also be called Phys. Ed. or gym class. It is a good way to use up some of that energy built up from sitting in class all day.
