Charlie's Endowment is hearing voices in photographs and occasionally, entering them and meeting the people in the photo. Charlie had failed all the other tests including painting a picture and acting out parts to get him into Bloor's, so he only got in because of his Endowment.

Borlath was the eldest son of the Red King. He was a brutal and sadistic tyrant. The Red King had ten children, but five of the children were good, and five were bad. The five good children left the land because of all the horrible things the bad children were doing.

Manfred and Ezekiel tried to bring back Borlath, their ancestor. Asa found a heart in a pouch marked with a 'B'. Ezekiel thought it must have been Borlath's, because he was the only child of the Red King's who had a name beginning with 'B'. Accidentally, the heart disappeared and the war-horse's bones did too. Charlie discovered that it wasn't Borlath as a war horse, but Berenice, the Queen.
