Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Chosen One
Answer: Harry Potter
In the "Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince", Harry Potter became known as the "Chosen One" around the school after the revealing of the prophecy that dictated he was the only person that could defeat Lord Voldemort. After a year of being called a lunatic and a fraud by many of his classmates for revealing Voldemort's return, Harry is quite popular in the sixth year and his nickname circulates around the school.
2. The Half-Blood Prince
Answer: Severus Snape
Snape was an anti-hero for the majority of the series until he became seen as a true villain at the end of "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" after he seemingly killed Dumbledore in front of Harry's eyes. When Snape was in school, he gave himself the nickname of half-blood prince, as his mother was a witch with the last name "Prince" and his father was an abusive muggle. Harry finds his old potions book which he uses to gain an advantage in the classroom, impressing his new Professor Slughorn and irritating Hermione, who feels that he has cheated.
3. The Dark Lord
Answer: Voldemort
Voldemort's name is not spoken by his followers or his enemies, for the most part. His enemies would refer to him as "You-Know-Who" and "He Who Must Not Be Named" in order to avoid saying his name. His followers, meanwhile, refer to him as the "Dark Lord". Voldemort is the primary antagonist of the series, as he is the character the orphaned Harry by killing his parents when he was an infant.
4. Moony
Answer: Remus Lupin
Remus Lupin was a werewolf who ran around with his three friends, Sirius Black, Peter Pettigrew, and James Potter. When he was at school, all three of his friends became animagi and they roamed the school together during Lupin's transformation - he was given the nickname "Moony" as he became a werewolf during the full moon.
5. Wormtail
Answer: Peter Pettigrew
Wormtail, named for his small tail as a rat in animagus form, was the man who betrayed Lily and James Potter to Voldemort. Even though he was in Gryffindor as a Hogwarts student, he did not display any of the brave characteristics that are normally associated with Gryffindors, as he was a cowardly man who could not stand in the face of Voldemort when he asked him to deliver the Potters.
6. Padfoot
Answer: Sirius Black
Sirius Black was Harry's godfather who was imprisoned for twelve years for a crime he did not commit. In animagus form, he was a large black dog, which gave him the nickname Padfoot. After he escaped from the wizarding prison Azkhaban, he became a father figure in Harry's life until his death at the hands of his cousin, Bellatrix Lestrange, in "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix".
7. Prongs
Answer: James Potter
Harry's father would transform into a stag as an animagus, which gave him the nickname Prongs. After leaving school, he put his trust and his family's life in the hands of Peter Pettigrew, who betrayed him to Voldemort, resulting in his death. While he bravely tried to ward Voldemort off, the dark wizard was able to get into the house and kill his wife.
He was, however, unable to kill his son, as the mother's sacrifice saved the infant boy, leading to the events of the series.
8. Mad-Eye
Answer: Alastor Moody
Alastor Moody was a famous auror, or dark-wizard catcher, that lost his eye in a duel with a Death Eater. As a result, he had a mechanical eye that could turn all the way around his head and see through invisibility cloaks. This earned him the nickname "Mad-Eye", in part due to his angry and constantly vigilant demeanor.
9. Diddykins
Answer: Dudley Dursley
The nickname was affectionately given to him by his mother, Petunia Dursley, who spoiled and treated him like a prince, all the while neglecting Harry, who was an orphan living under her roof. In "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix", right before Harry and Dudley are attacked by dementors sent by Dolores Umbridge, Harry mockingly uses several of Petunia's nicknames on Dudley to coax and humiliate him.
10. Loony
Answer: Luna Lovegood
Luna Lovegood was a kind-hearted girl with several eccentricities, leading to her being given this pejorative nickname by several of her classmates. Her father, Xenophilius, was the editor of "The Quibbler" and the source behind most of her outlandish beliefs.
