Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who is the narrator in this book?

Answer: Elmo Zimmer

In this series, the characters take turns narrating the book and the events that go on. In this one, it is Elmo.
2. What are the first two words of the book?

Answer: Buried treasure!

The gang are searching for what they think is buried treasure although initially they are jeering and scoffing at the idea that buried treasure is in Raven Hill.
3. The book written by Sullivan Pause which aids the gang to solve the case is called "The..." what?

Answer: Thieving Gentleman

The book is entitled "The Thieving Gentleman" which is all about the life of a man who stole from the rich and gave it to the poor. Elmo reads it to find more about the man. Sullivan Pause, the author, is the "thieving gentleman"'s great great grandson.
4. Sunny is there when they visit Sullivan Pause for the first time.

Answer: False

Sunny is the athletic one in the group and could not go with the rest of the gang due to gym class. Richelle and Nick also don't go as they think it is a waste of time.
5. What is Captain Glory's real name?

Answer: Edward Parkes

Captain Glory was an alias name. Edward was actually a respectable local tradesman in Raven Hill and no one knew about his secret identity, not even his wife Jane.
6. Sullivan Pause recites a poem written by Captain Glory for the gang to hear; who gaoled Captain Glory?

Answer: Hamilton

Captain Glory had a passion for writing poetry and this particular poem that Sullivan Pause reads was written on the night Captain Glory was captured.

"Both pistols failed me and Hamilton gaoled me
He left me to rot in a cold, stinking cell.
So I'll hie me away, but I'll come back one day
To claim the great treasure I've hidden so well."
7. In the first clue, what is the word that is used to rhyme with "toil"?

Answer: soil

Most treasure is buried and in this case, it is no different. This clue was hidden in the false bottom of a metal case Elmo had found.
8. What animal helps the gang find the second clue?

Answer: rabbit

By chance, the gang decide to take a break during midday and find that there are two rocks shaped like rabbits near the resting place. The shadows from the sun cause the shadows of the rabbits to meet, signally the place where the treasure is buried.

"Where Raven Hill ends and the azure extends,
Where I sat down and plotted my bushranger's toil,
Where the two rabbits meet under full summer's heat
There I buried my jewels, deep under the soil."
9. Where does the second clue lead Teen Power Inc.?

Answer: Graveyard

The second clue reads:
"Piety never seems so clever
To one who loves riches, and venture and strife
Yet hallowed and blessed are the jewels I love best
For they lie jumbled there at the end of Bert's life."

They find Captain Glory's best friend, Albert Joseph Brooks's tombstone in the graveyard which says "RIP - All cried for the young man". This turns out to be their third clue.
10. What was Captain Glory's day job?

Answer: He was a stonemason

He was a stonemason and made the tombstone for Bert. He also did the engraving which is the third and final clue.
11. The final clue reveals a secret message: "Money - ______ Craigend pillar".

Answer: Fourth

The pillars were also made by Captain Glory, initially to be used on the porch outside of Craigend. However, they weren't wanted and so were used as structures to support the gazebo at Craigend. It just so happens that Matron of Craigend, asks them to clip the ivy on the gazebo.

The fourth pillar was carved with Roman numerals IV and when Elmo asked Richelle if she could see I-V, Richelle exclaims, "There's ivy everywhere!" thinking he meant the plant rather than the Roman numerals.
12. Did Molevale withdraw their advertising?

Answer: No

Ken Molevale was planning on withdrawing their advertising from the local newspaper that Elmo's dad runs, "The Pen". This was because there were not enough big news stories around and not much attention for "The Pen". However, once the gang had solved the case, Ken decided to stick with "The Pen".
13. Does Sullivan Pause die?

Answer: No

After hearing from the gang when they hit a dead end that the treasure didn't exist, Sullivan Pause felt he had wasted his whole life. He was old enough as it was and this news sucked the life out of him. They had lifted his hopes up with the prospect of finding treasure and then let them fall. However, they found the treasure in the last minute and he managed to get better.
14. How many people were stalking the gang in the end?

Answer: Four

Elmo's father, Harley Green, the construction worker and Helen Bishop were all stalking the gang. Elmo's father was worried Elmo was trying to do something dangerous to get a news story so that Ken Molevale wouldn't withdraw their advertising since they advertised a large portion in the newspaper. Harley Green is a nosy historian who works at "The Pen" and is looking for the treasure, as is the construction worker who found the metal case and gave it to Elmo and so is Helen Bishop who is Sullivan's daughter's friend who is looking after Sullivan but heard the whole story about the treasure (probably from eavesdropping behind the door).
15. What was Captain Glory's treasure?

Answer: A book of poems

His treasure was a book of poems with ballads about horses, bushranging, poor vs rich, his family, Raven Hill, stonemasonary, etc. It was his most precious treasure, a hand-bound book and he wrote all his poems in it. He probably thought they might sell for a lot but they weren't really a fortune.

The dedication on the front page of the poetry book is as follows:
"Herein lies my treasure, my joy without measure,
My poems, my gems, the best work I can do.
And the money they'll make I'll be happy to take
My dear reader, I pray that you find your dreams too."
