Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was Emily's mother's name?

Answer: Juliet

Emily's father wanted to name her after her mother, but her mother disliked the idea because she was afraid it would lead to him calling her "mother" if she and her daughter both had the same name.
2. What was Emily's father's profession when he met Emily's mother?

Answer: Journalist

Harsh things were said by the Murrays when Emily's parents married, and Emily's father never really forgave them.
3. Emily's ancestors originally settled on Prince Edward Island when an ancestor, headed elsewhere, was allowed to leave the ship they were sailing on and then refused to reboard because she'd been extremely sea-sick. She said, "Here I stay", and did. Who was this ancestor?

Answer: Mary Murray

Mary Murray's husband eventually got over being angry at his wife for refusing to leave PEI, but, in what is probably one of the funniest lines in the series, Emily discovers that when Mary died her husband had "Here I Stay" written on her gravestone.
4. Perry Miller was hired as the Murrays' chore boy on New Moon farm. His Aunt Tom said she would pay for Perry's education, if Emily did one thing. What was it?

Answer: Agree to marry Perry when she and Perry were older

Neither Perry nor Emily was pleased with this demand, though Perry made it clear he intended to ask Emily to marry him himself when they were older.
5. What did Emily's teacher, Miss Brownell, do to humiliate her in front of the entire class?

Answer: Read her poetry out loud, making fun of it

After Miss Brownell tried to burn pages of Emily's poetry and Emily stopped her, Miss Brownell went to New Moon to talk to Aunt Elizabeth about punishing Emily. For once, Aunt Elizabeth stood up for Emily, or at least partially, refusing to force Emily to kneel to ask forgiveness.
6. When Emily fell ill and dreamed the truth of what happened to Ilse's mother, who made certain that the old Lee well was searched and the remains of Beatrice Burnley discovered?

Answer: Aunt Elizabeth

Aunt Elizabeth did not believe in Emily's dream and dreaded bringing up the old scandal, but she had promised Emily she would have the well searched, and kept her promise.
7. When Emily visited Father Cassidy to ask for his help with Lofty John, Emily recited some of her poetry to him. What encouraging thing did he say to her after listening to it?

Answer: "Keep on - keep on writing poetry".

She would have continued to write, regardless of his response, but it still thrilled her to have someone acknowledge her dream.
8. Why did Emily and Ilse first go to the Tansy Patch to visit Teddy?

Answer: Because he had been sick and Ilse's father, Doctor Burnley, told them to go and help "cheer him up"

Doctor Burnley, despite being a "heathen", which was considered one of the worst possible social offenses in Emily's world, had a great deal of authority, and when he ordered someone to do something, even Aunt Elizabeth, they generally did it.
9. To whom did Emily write her first "real" letter, one sent through the mail? Hint-it went to Priest Pond.

Answer: Great-Aunt Nancy Priest

Aunt Elizabeth told Emily she would be reading the letter when she was done, which made Emily so self-conscious that her letter led Great-Aunt Nancy to believe Emily was "stupid".
10. From whom did Emily first hear the story of what supposedly happened to Ilse's mother?

Answer: Nancy Priest and Caroline Priest

Of course, it wasn't the true story, which Emily would find out.
