Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Con

Answer: Maynard

Mary Constance Maynard, or 'Con' for short, is the middle of Joey and Jack Maynard's triplets, born on 5th November, and has black hair like her mother. She is quiet and dreamy, with a vivid imagination, and prone to sleepwalking; in 'Joey Goes to the Oberland', she manages to sleepwalk onto a roof! Like her mother, she writes stories and lives in a world of her own while working on a story.

She has a tendency to speak her mind that sometimes lands her in trouble. She and her sister Len go to Oxford University after finishing school.
2. Simon

Answer: Wentworth

Simon is the youngest Wentworth boy and the second-youngest of the Wentworth children, who are Catholic and half French on their mother's side. He has black hair that is often in need of cutting, and is mischievous and cheeky. He sings in the school choir and has a beautiful singing voice, and Veronica is jealous because Simon doesn't need to practice, unlike her.

He dislikes Stephen Carey. In 'The Nightwatch Winter', he is one of the main characters, when he and his friends at their boys' school team up with the convent his sisters go to to put on an Easter play in a local church. Simon sings most of the solos in the play.

He helps alert the local villagers when he and his siblings find the old gypsy woman, Mrs King, unconscious in her shack after sustaining a skull fracture.
3. Nicola

Answer: Marlow

Nicola is one of the Marlow twins, and the more practical and outgoing of the two, although she has her moments of recklessness, such as when she drops her knife out of a window and stops the train to look for it in 'Autumn Term'. She is passionate about falconry, sailing and the Navy - her older brother Giles is in the Navy - and a big fan of the 'Hornblower' books.

She plays netball and cricket and gets kicked off the netball team by prefect Lois Sanger, but gets her own back when she leads the Fourth cricket team to victory against the Sixth in 'The Cricket Term'.

She rescues her niece Rose from a paedophile in 'The Ready-Made Family' and tackles a smuggler in 'The Marlows and the Traitor'.
4. Phil

Answer: Maynard

Philippa Anne 'Phil' Maynard is the youngest of Joey and Jack Maynard's daughters, and the twin sister of Geoffrey. Joey is ill while pregnant with her second set of twins, and Phil herself later becomes ill, firstly with mastoiditis, then polio. She does recover, but is very thin and has to learn to walk again, and Bruno, the Maynards' dog, is trained to be gentle around her.

She has chestnut hair and is more intelligent than her twin. In 'Two Sams at the Chalet School', Samaris Davies helps entertain her by playing her newly-acquired flute.
5. Veronica

Answer: Wentworth

Veronica is the third youngest of the Wentworth children, and the second youngest girl. She has 'coppery' hair and is nervous and irritable, with a tendency to cry easily. She plays the piano and practices a lot, annoying her siblings, and in 'Creed Country', she makes Sarah sing in a contest while she accompanies, but gets angry with her when Sarah has stage fright and they are disqualified. She accidentally wanders into a hole in a river and falls in, but her brother David rescues her. In 'The Nightwatch Winter', she falls down a hole and is buried alive while exploring the smugglers' trail. She later stays with Mrs King while Simon and Monica get help, and adopts the old woman's cat after she dies. She also arranges the carols for the Easter play and sings a couple with Simon.

Veronica has an awkward relationship with Anne, her older sister (who comes between Sarah and David), and is angry with Anne when Anne decides she wants to be a nun and becomes quiet and secretive. Eventually, they have a long talk in 'Creed Country' after Anne is injured in a car accident, and has trouble sleeping due to nightmares. Anne helps supervise the rehearsals for the play in 'The Nightwatch Winter' and is also a narrator.
6. Karen

Answer: Marlow

Karen is the oldest of the Marlow sisters and is Head Girl in 'Autumn Term'. She is not as fair as she thinks she is, and later admits she didn't care much about being Head Girl and, unlike her sister Rowan, did not expect to be obeyed. She has a scholarship to Oxford, but gives it up to marry Edwin Dodd, an older widowed man with three children, Charles (Chas), Rose and Phoebe (Fob) in 'The Ready-Made Family'. Edwin and his children temporarily move in with the Marlows until they find a house, causing tensions. Rose runs away from home and Nicola tracks her down to Oxford, to find her in the company of a paedophile who claims to be her uncle. Nicola sends a telegram and Edwin comes to Oxford to get them.

The Dodds later move into a home of their own.
7. Felicity

Answer: Maynard

Felicity Josephine Maynard and her brother Felix are Joey and Jack Maynard's first pair of twins, and have white-blonde hair. Joey gives birth to Felicity while the Maynards are living in Canada. Felicity is a fan of ballet and dances with her friends in school plays, but not as enthusiastic about school as her older sisters.

She and Felix become boarders at the Chalet School in Switzerland when the new kindergarten, St Nicholas', is added. She is small for her age.
8. Monica

Answer: Wentworth

Monica is the youngest of the Wentworth children. She has black hair, is impatient and adventurous - climbing the bell tower in 'Creed Country' despite Sarah warning her not to - and is based on Jenny Overton's younger sister. In 'Creed Country', she comes up with the idea of building a new chapel on a local hill which is thought to be consecrated ground.

In 'The Nightwatch Winter', she and her siblings and friends explore an old smuggling trail, and she later goes to the village with Simon after finding Mrs King, and stays there while the villagers send messages in Morse code to people in the church and on the hill.

She is one of the actors in the Easter play.
9. Lawrie

Answer: Marlow

Lawrie, full name Lawrence, is Nicola Marlow's twin sister and the more intense and sensitive of the two. She is prone to crying fits and gets scared easily (for example, she hates lighting gas because 'it bangs at me'). She co-owns a pony, the Idiot Boy.

In 'Autumn Term', she befriends Tim Keith and discovers a talent for acting when the form put on a production of 'The Prince and the Pauper', and plays the Shepherd Boy in 'End of Term'. In 'The Cricket Term', she quits the production of 'The Tempest' because she wants to play Caliban and not Ariel, but wins the Prosser Scholarship, enabling both her and Nicola to stay on (Mrs Marlow had planned to take Nicola out of Kingscote as she could not afford the fees).
10. Charles

Answer: Maynard

Charles Richard James Maynard is the fifth Maynard child and the second of Joey and Jack's sons. He has black hair and is delicate, and gets appendicitis while on a family holiday in Switzerland. He is quiet and sensitive, and Joey thinks he may enter the priesthood one day.

He also loves animals, nature and toy trains. Like his brother Mike and Steve, he goes to boarding school in England.
11. Sarah

Answer: Wentworth

Sarah is the fifth Wentworth child and the heroine of 'Creed Country'. Stephen Carey, the vicar's son, meets her in the graveyard when the rest of her family are exploring the local church. She and Stephen become friends and investigate the old letters and other papers of the Creeds, a local family whose descendants have lived in the village for centuries; the Creed papers are from around the reign of Queen Elizabeth I. Sarah identifies strongly with Anthony Creed, the black sheep of the family, who ran away to France and later killed himself. She is upset when she finds out that Anthony betrayed his brother Quentin, a Catholic priest who was practising in secret and was executed, and temporarily falls out with Stephen when she tells Anne about the Creed papers. When the bones of Anthony and Quentin Creed are found, Sarah goes to the police station to talk to the police about them. She and her siblings, minus Anne, attend a funeral ceremony for the brothers.

As well as Simon, Anne, David, Monica and Veronica, Sarah also has an older sister, Theo, and an older brother, Nick, both of whom have left home. Nick is working abroad while Theo is at Oxford University.
12. Ginty

Answer: Marlow

Virginia 'Ginty' Marlow is the fifth Marlow child (as well as Karen and the twins, there are two other girls, Anne and Rowan, and another boy, Peter, who comes between Ginty and the twins). Ginty is good at hockey, swimming and diving, but poor academically and gets a bad report. She is a major character in 'The Attic Term', when she shares a room with the twins and gets into trouble when she makes a clandestine phone call to her boyfriend and Peter's friend, Patrick Merrick, after finding the answer papers to some exam questions. Patrick's parents disapprove of Ginty as they find her flighty and shallow.

Rowan is the third Marlow child and leaves school to take over the family farm. She and Lois Sanger are enemies and Lois carries on the grudge towards the twins. Anne, the fourth Marlow, is kind and good with children, but also something of a doormat, and her younger sisters take advantage of her. Like her namesake in 'Creed Country' and 'The Nightwatch Winter', she is religious.
