Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the very centre of an archery target or dart board called?

Answer: a bullseye

Although it is in "the middle", as well as a "centre spot" and an "aiming place", the proper name is "bullseye". The word's origin is from 1833 and was defined as "centre of a target". Under the GNAS (Grand National Archery Society), the bullseye is worth ten points, while under the rules of the PDF(Professional Darts Federation), a centre bullseye is valued at fifty points while the outer bullseye has a value of twenty-five points.
2. What sportsman can be referred to as an "angler"?

Answer: a fisherman

When you hear somebody refer to a person as an angler, then they're also calling them a "fisherman". Dictionary.com defines an angler as "someone who fishes with a hook and line".
3. In 1990, Dale Lyons ran a marathon while balancing what item on a spoon?

Answer: an egg

Why someone would want to run a marathon at all is beyond me. But, to run a marathon while balancing an egg on a spoon? Twenty-six miles later I'd say the egg must have been scrambled. The other items would simply be too heavy and too difficult for a feat like this.
4. How long does a bull rider have to stay on a bull in order to qualify for a score?

Answer: eight seconds

A few rodeo events require the rider to stay on for eight seconds, including bullriding. It may not seem long to some people, yet when you have a ton of uncontrollable beef underneath you, it must seem like forever. LOL
5. What general name applies to all games such as pool, snooker, eight-ball, nine-ball, and Boston Ball?

Answer: billiard sports

History shows us that "billiard sports", or "billiards", was the term everyone used when referring to games of skill which are played with a straight cue stick and hard deflective balls. The cue is used to hit the billiard balls, causing them to move and carom (bounce) around a felt cloth-covered billiards table that has rubber edges called cushions.

The original game of billiards was played on a table that had no pockets at all. Most tables today have six pockets: four corner pockets and two side pockets.
6. What sport do the Harlem Globetrotters play?

Answer: basketball

The Harlem Globetrotters have been entertaining basketball fans with their comedic, but very skillful, routines for over eighty years. In that time, they have played over twenty-two thousand games in front of delighted fans from well over one hundred countries. On February 27, 2006, the 'Trotters' won game number twenty-two thousand while on March 31, 2006, they suffered only their three hundred and forty-fifth loss.

Their record of 22,000 wins and 345 defeats as of March 2006 gave them an unmatched career winning percentage of 98.4%.
7. In which non-physical sport can you score with leaners and ringers?

Answer: Horseshoes

Horseshoes is a game that can be played almost anywhere from the beach to your own backyard. It is unknown who invented the game. The main goal of the game is to throw your horseshoes at a sand pit forty feet away and come as close as possible to the metal target bar in the centre of the sand pit.

The closest player scores and most games are played until someone reaches twenty-one points.
8. In which sport would you perform a move called a "hand plant" at the top of a ramp?

Answer: skateboarding

A hand plant is a really cool skateboarding trick that you can perform on quarter pipes, half pipes, and at the end of ramps. It is not technically hard, but relies on the skater's ability to balance on their hands.
The "hand plant" can easily turn into a "face plant" if one does not concentrate on keeping their hand work and leg work steady and coordinated which helps avoid hurting your head or arms.
9. In North American football, what is the word used to describe a single play?

Answer: a down

Each single play in Canadian and American football is called a down. In the Professional Canadian Football League, the offensive team has three downs (or tries) to get ten yards and another first down opportunity, while in the American National Football League, the offensive team has four downs to gain ten yards and the first down.
10. What do the letters S & C stand for in NASCAR motor racing?

Answer: Stock Car

NASCAR stands for North American "Stock Car" (S & C) Association Racing. The other answers can easily describe the sport in which cars often reach speeds of nearly two hundred miles per hour.
