Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Third planet from the sun

Answer: Earth

After Pluto was removed the list of our planets, there are eight planets in our solar system. Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune is the order from closest to the sun to the farthest away.
2. Known as the Dog Star

Answer: Sirius

Sirius is located in the Canis Major constellation. It gets the name dog star since Canis Major translates into the "Greater Dog". It is one of the brightest stars to the naked eye on Earth.
3. Named a dwarf planet in 2006

Answer: Pluto

Pluto was one of the nine planets in the Milky Way but was reclassified in 2006 by the International Astronomical Union (IAU) as a dwarf planet. They have identified five dwarf planets in our solar system, Ceres, Pluto, Haumea, Makemake, and Eris.
4. Largest moon in our solar system

Answer: Ganymede

Ganymede, Titan, and Callisto are the three biggest moons in our solar system. Ganymede is the largest and actually bigger than Mercury and Pluto! Earth's moon ranks fifth in size.
5. Third largest planet in our solar system

Answer: Uranus

In terms of size, the biggest to smallest planets are Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Earth, Venus, Mars, and Mercury. For comparison, Uranus, the seventh planet from the sun, is four times wider than Earth.
6. Planet that Viking 1 landed on

Answer: Mars

By the year 2021, the United States have landed nine times on Mars, starting with Viking 1 and 2 in 1976 and Perseverance in 2021. Viking 1 landed on July 20, 1976 on Chryse Planitia in Mars. Later missions have even found the presence of water on Mars.
7. Planet with seven main rings around it

Answer: Saturn

One of the easiest planets to recognize is Saturn with the beautiful colored rings that encircle the planet. There are actually more than the seven prominent rings. Each of the rings are thought to be debris caused by Saturn's gravity on asteroids and comets nearby the planet.
8. Also known as the North Star

Answer: Polaris

The reason why Polaris is called the North Star is that it appears to stay in the same place in the sky, close to the north celestial pole (which is also shown by its official name). For centuries, navigators at sea have used the North Star for positioning.
9. Largest object in our solar system

Answer: The Sun

The Sun is a massive ball of hydrogen and helium that has a diameter of over 800,00 miles. It's as wide as 109 Earths put side by side and you could place a million Earths inside of it.
10. Orbits the Sun in fewer days than Earth

Answer: Venus

Earth's revolution around the sun takes roughly 365 days. The two planets closer to the sun are Mercury and Venus. Venus makes the revolution in 243 Earth days and Mercury takes only 59 Earth days. The further a planet is from the Sun, the longer it takes to complete a revolution.
