Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In Afrikaans, this animal's name means Earth Pig.

Answer: Aardvark

Aard = earth, vark = pig, though why this furry, long-nosed animal would remind anyone of a pig is beyond me. There's also an aardwolf, meaning earthwolf, a close relative of the hyena.
2. My dictionary describes this word as meaning "1: (of an older man, especially in relation to younger people) benevolent and friendly. 2: of or pertaining to an uncle.

Answer: Avuncular

Avuncular derives from the Latin 'avunculus', meaning 'uncle', of course.
3. This is properly described as an Aboriginal language group of the sub-Arctic regions of the Northwest Territories, Yukon, northern British Columbia, and the northern prairie provinces of Canada.

Answer: Athabaskan

The Athabaskan peoples are primarily comprised of the Gwich'in, Dogrib, Slavey, Ahtna, Kolchin, Tanana, Tsetsaut, Tagish, Tahitan, Kaska, Sekani, Carrier, Chilcotin and Koyukon nations, and some others. The Navajo and Apache languages bear some resemblance to Athabaskan languages, causing some anthropologists to surmise that the Navajo and Apache peoples migrated south from the Athabaskan regions thousands of years ago.
4. A person who collects or deals in old and/or rare books or antiques is known as this word beginning with 'A'.

Answer: antiquarian

The meaning, I would suggest, is pretty obvious. An antiquary is a person who is the custodian and/or official recorder of antiquities. The first official antiquary in England was John Leland, who was appointed by Henry VIII.
5. This is the collective name of those writings not included in the general canon of Christian scripture.

Answer: Apocrypha

The Apocrypha is that collection of pre-Christian scriptural writings not included in the formal canon we know as the Bible because they are of unknown, or doubtful origin. You will find them in a separate section of modern bibles, although they are included in the Roman Catholic bibles. Protestant bibles tend to exclude them altogether.

The word derives from the Greek apokruptein, meaning 'hide away'. Nowadays, anything that is apocryphal means something that probably didn't happen but can be used to illustrate a point.
6. Now spell the word that means the point in the moon's orbit when it is furthest from the earth.

Answer: Apogee

Apogee derives from the Greek apogaios, meaning 'far from the earth' (a=away from, gaia=earth).
7. Any medicine that suppresses a cough is known as this kind of drug.

Answer: Antitussive

Your doctor will tell that the Latin word for 'cough' is 'tussis', so anything that works to suppress a cough, is anti (against) a tussis.
8. When you completely destroy something, you do this to it.

Answer: Annihilate

The Latin 'annihilare', from which we derive annihilate, means 'bring to nothing', which seems a pretty good descriptor.
9. Your doctor will tell you that this medical condition refers to the 'hypersensitivity of tissues to a dose of antigen'.

Answer: Anaphylaxis

An antigen is a foreign substance injected into the bloodstream, which causes the body to produce antibodies. Anaphylaxis may result, causing the person to go into what is known as anaphylactic shock - i.e. a heightened allergic reaction.
10. If you have a sponsor, or come under the protection of a powerful person, you are referred to as being under that person's ?

Answer: Aegis

The word aegis is Greek, and means 'shield'. If one is under the protection or sponsorship of a powerful person, one is, presumably, under that person's shield. Auspices, which is also an acceptable answer, generally means favourable influence, and derives from the Latin auspicium, the action of an auspex, the person who divined omens from the flight of birds.
