Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the chemical name of Egyptian blue, the oldest synthetic pigment known to man?

Answer: Silicate

It is an artificial copper calcium silicate, with the chemical formula of
CaCuSi4O10. However, the actual composition of samples found at ancient sites varies considerably. It is used in ancient times as a pigment in painting on walls, tombs and mummies' coffins, and also as a ceramic glaze known as Egyptian falence. The color meant considerable prestige as it was not available naturally.
2. During what imperial Chinese dynasty was the practice of creating cobalt blue-and-white porcelain fine ceramics first perfected?

Answer: Ming

The ceramic porcelains of Ming Dynasty porcelain of China (1368-1644 CE) were produced in Jingdezhen in Jiangxi province. Highly prized Ming blue and white influenced the ceramics of many countries from Japan to Britain.

The development was a combination of Chinese techniques and Islamic trade. The ware was made possible by the cobalt from Persia (Islamic blue or Muslim blue) combined with the translucent white quality of the Chinese porcelain, derived from kaolin. The Ming porcelains were produced as vases (from small flower vases to large wine vessels), jars, cups, bowls and plates.
