Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. We start in Cincinnati, the Queen of the west. We'll grab lunch before we head out and what better place than Skyline Chili? Skyline has a unique blend of spices, for sure, but what really makes Skyline unique is that its chili is served over a bed of what?

Answer: Spaghetti noodles

Founded in 1949, Skyline's chili uses a Mediterranean-inspired blend of spices which also includes cinnamon and cloves. Skyline now has more than 150 locations across Ohio and into neighboring Indiana, Kentucky, and way down into Florida. Pictured here is the 4-Way Chili made of chili, cheddar cheese, spaghetti noodles, and diced onions or beans.
2. Just a short drive northeast takes us to Mason, Ohio, home of King's Island, home of a wonderful collection of roller coasters and other thrill rides. There is one in particular that I'm eager to ride. What is the name of this ride that has been consistently ranked among the top wooden roller coasters in the world?

Answer: The Beast

Currently the longest wooden roller coaster in the world, The Beast checks in at just over 2 miles in length and covers nearly 35 acres of forest terrain. The Beast opened in 1979 and reaches speeds of 64 miles per hour and lasts over four minutes. It is still one of my favorite rides to this day.
3. North we go again and stop off in Dayton, Ohio to visit the National Museum of the US Air Force. Although there are hundreds of amazing aircraft to see, I want to see a plane that was the subject of a 1990 film starring Matthew Modine, Sean Astin, and Harry Connick Junior. What famous airplane (and movie) is this?

Answer: Memphis Belle

"Memphis Belle" follows the crew of the titular B-17F as it flies its 25th and final bombing run over Germany. The mission is fraught with danger and impossible choices. The airplane was named after pilot Robert K. Morgan's girlfriend who lived in Memphis, Tennessee (pictured).

The National Museum of the US Air Force was established in 1923 at Wright-Patterson air force base outside Dayton, Ohio. The museum is comprised of the primary museum and hangar and three additional hangars for a total of 220,000 square feet of exhibition space. Other notable craft include Bockscar which dropped the second atomic bomb over Nagasaki, the Apollo 15 command module, and the only surviving XB-70 Valkyrie.
4. After a three-hour drive northeast, we arrive in Sandusky, home of the second of Ohio's exceptional amusement parks, Cedar Point. Sandusky was also the setting for which 1995 comedy starring David Spade and the late Chris Farley?

Answer: Tommy Boy

Thomas Callahan III is a perennial screwup who returns home after barely graduating to take a job at his father's auto part plant. When his father suddenly dies, Tommy must defy all odds (like Thomas Jefferson, pictured here) to save the company.

Cedar Point, dubbed the Roller Coaster Capital of the World, first opened in 1870 and has been a Mecca of sorts for roller coaster enthusiasts the world over.
5. On we go to Cleveland and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. While the legacies of many wonderful and talented musicians and musical groups are enshrined here, only one can say they were the first to be inducted on three separate occasions. Who is this seminal artist?

Answer: Eric Clapton

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame first opened to the public in 1995 and was designed by world-renowned architect, I.M. Pei. Eric Clapton was inducted first in 1992 for his work with The Yardbirds. In 1993 he was inducted a second time as a member of Cream and in 2000 was recognized for his outstanding solo career.
6. From Cleveland, we head southeast to the town of Kent, Ohio to visit the May 4th Memorial. On this site, 13 unarmed college students were shot by the national guard during a protest. Four of the students died. These students were protesting United States' involvement in what war?

Answer: Vietnam War

In the days leading up to the shooting, forces from South Vietnam (pictured here) had invaded eastern Cambodia, angering anti-war protesters across the country. Protest activity began to increase on the campus of Kent State, culminating in the events of May 4th in which roughly 1200 students gathered in a grassy area in the center of campus. Shortly after noon, a national guard sergeant fired his pistol in the crowd and other guardsmen followed suit, expending more than 60 bullets into the crowd. Jeffrey Miller, Allison B. Krause, William Schroeder, and Sandra Lee Scheuer all lost their lives that day.
7. South we now travel to Canton, Ohio to the Hall of Fame for which American professional sport?

Answer: American Professional Football

In the early days of the NFL, the Canton Bulldogs were a powerhouse, winning the championship in 1922 and 1923. In fact, the NFL (then called the American Professional Football Association) was founded in Canton in 1920. In the early 1960s, the residents of Canton successfully lobbied the NFL to build its new hall of fame in their city. The Hall was finished on September of 1963 and honors players from the NFL, AFL, and the All-America Football Conference which existed from 1946 through 1949.

Pictured here is the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum where Super Bowl I was played between the Chiefs and Packers in 1967.
8. Westward we head on route 30 to Mansfield, Ohio, home of the Ohio State Reformatory. Built on an old Civil War Union Training Camp, the reformatory was closed down in 1990 by order of a US federal court. The prison has become a popular tourist destination and has also been the backdrop of many TV shows and movies including what popular 1994 Stephen King adaptation?

Answer: The Shawshank Redemption

Starring Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman, "The Shawshank Redemption" tells the story of Andy Dufresne, a man wrongly convicted of murder and his journey to freedom during which he utilized a rock hammer similar to the one pictured.

The Ohio State Reformatory is popular among ghost hunters due to the hundreds of inmates that perished in its near 100-year history.
9. At the center of the state, we find Ohio's capital and largest city, Columbus, and The Ohio State University, the state's flagship institution of higher learning. Ohio Stadium, home to the Buckeyes, shares what nickname with the geological feature pictured here?

Answer: The Horseshoe

One of the largest stadiums in the United States, Ohio Stadium is one of the most recognizable due to its unique horseshoe shape. While expansions and renovations have been made since the stadium's first opening in 1922, the same shape has been preserved over the decades.

Pictured is Horseshoe Bend, a meandering section of the Colorado River near Page, Arizona.
10. Our final stop is Peebles, Ohio. A tiny town of fewer than 2000 people that is generally unremarkable except for a 400-foot long effigy mound nearby thought to be more than 2000 years old. What is the name of this ancient creation?

Answer: Serpent Mound

Ranging in height from nine inches to three feet, Serpent Mound was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1966. Scholars believe that effigy mounds such as this held religious significance to the ancient Native Americans and some, though not this one in particular, were used for burial purposes as well. Some burial mounds can be found near the serpent mound.
