Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Do, a deer, a female deer". Well, not always. Which other word is also used to describe a female deer?

Answer: Hind

Hind is often used to describe the female red deer, and hart is often used for the stag of the red deer. Doe is not exclusively used for the female deer. It can also be used as a description for, amongst others, the female gerbil, hamster, goat, kangaroo and koala.
2. "Re, a drop of golden sun". We all know that too much exposure to strong sun can result in skin cancers, but too little sunshine is bad for you as well. Which vitamin do you get from exposure to sunshine?

Answer: Vitamin D

Vitamin D is often called the "sunshine vitamin" because the human body has the ability to synthesise it when exposed to sunlight. For people who live in areas where there are low sunlight levels, especially those areas of the world where the sun is not seen at all during the winter months, either a diet rich in Vitamin D or supplements are required.

It naturally occurs in oily fish, eggs and offal. Vitamin D deficiency is linked to several bone diseases including rickets.
3. "Mi, a name I call myself". In which opera is Mimi's little hand frozen?

Answer: La Boheme

Written by Puccini "La Boheme" premiered in 1896 and swiftly established itself as part of the standard Italian opera repertory. All of the great tenors, including Pavarotti and Placido Domingo, have sung Rudolfo. In 1973 a recording conducted by Sir George Solti with Domingo as Rudolfo and Montserrat Caballe as Mimi won the Grammy for Best Opera Recording.

It is a firm favourite with audiences all over the world, and is comfortably in the top ten most performed operas.
4. "Fa, a long long way to run". In which year was the first London Marathon held?

Answer: 1981

Founded by Chris Brasher and David Bedford, the London Marathon was first run in 1981. At the time many experts said that ordinary people who had done only a few months of training could not possibly run a marathon, but in 1981 around 6,000 people proved them all wrong. Since then the race has gone on to become one of the top street marathons in the world.

It has raised millions of pounds for charities, and by 2009, 746,635 people had completed it.
5. "So, a needle puling thread". What is the generic name for needlework panels containing letters of the alphabet, a sample of various stitches and a motto or saying? These were often worked by quite young girls.

Answer: Sampler

From the 1500s onwards, young women embroidered samplers to demonstrate their skill at needlework. Common motifs were letters of the alphabet, a decorative band round the edges, small figures such as dogs or birds, a motto or saying along the lines of Bless This House, and often the name of the girl who did the work plus the date it was done, and sometimes her age.

The more elaborate they are, the more they are prized by collectors.
6. "La, a note to follow So". Poor La, just a note, nothing interesting or exotic. Where or what is Lala land?

Answer: A place in your own mind

Lala land is where people out of touch with reality are said to live, or where completely nonsensical ideas come from. There are two possible origins of the phrase. One is that it referred to Paris, as in "Ooh la la land", and the second is that it referred to Los Angeles.
7. "Ti, a drink with jam and bread". Tea time, an almost sacred institution amongst the English. Which musical does the song "Tea for Two" come from?

Answer: No No Nanette

Written in 1925, "Tea for Two" is a duet from "No No Nannette". It became a popular jazz standard. Tommy Dorset recorded a cha cha version of it, and Anita O'Day's performance of it in 1958 at the Newport Jazz Festival was one of the festival highlights. It has been used for advertisements, theme tunes and even recorded by Alvin and the Chipmunks.
8. "Which will bring us back to Do". What is the system of teaching the notes by using a fixed syllable for each one called?

Answer: The solfege system

The solfege system teaches sight singing by having each note sung to a fixed syllable. In English speaking countries these are do, re, mi, fa, so, la, and ti. Its origins are ancient. The use of a seven note scale goes back to at least the eleventh century in Europe, although there is a possibility that something similar may have been used in Arabic music even earlier.
9. Music is written for different types of singing voice. Which female singing voice has the highest range?

Answer: Soprano

Soprano is the highest female singing voice, although the most common is the mezzo-soprano. Over a singer's lifetime, his or her voice may change. Often it becomes lower with age. In male singers, an example of this is Placido Domingo who always sang tenor parts, but as he matured his voice lowered to the extent that he started singing bass parts.
10. If Do is equal to the note C then Do, Re, Mi, Fa, So, La, Ti, Do is a C Major scale. There are many scales in music; which of the following is NOT one of them?

Answer: Monochromatic

Musical theory contains many major and minor scales and mastery of them is the key to playing most musical instruments. When I took piano lessons many years ago, the C Major scale was the first one I learnt and it served as the building block for everything that came afterwards.
