Richard Branson owns all of Necker Island, which is part of the British Virgin Islands. It is operated as a holiday resort, but a very exclusive one as only 28 guests at a time can stay there. The island was completely uninhabited when he purchased it.

In 2011, a fire caused by a lightning strike completely destroyed the main house. Around 20 guests were staying there at the time, including Sir Richard's 90 year old mother, who was rescued by actress Kate Winslet.
