Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Our founding member is Baldricksmum. Apart from being Edmund Blackadder's smelly little sidekick, what is a baldrick?

Answer: A wide belt worn over the shoulder to support a sword by the hip

A cart for transporting hay is called a haywain. Wigs may be secured by tape, bobby pins and other ingenious methods. As far as I know, there is no other name for a shoe buckle.

Please rest assured, she hasn't really got a child called Baldrick.
2. Guess which Joliette contributed this one? "WorldB's handle was adopted from the actual legal name of a former sports star in the United States who was born in 1953 and given the first name of Lloyd (he changed it to World in 1980). Which sport did he play professionally?"

Answer: Basketball

Lloyd B. Free (World) was born in Georgia in 1953. He played in the NBA from 1975 to 1988 and was known as a high leaper and a player who never met a shot attempt he didn't like.

The nickname was attached to this Joliette member in college as a joke because of his failure to excel in basketball.
3. A contribution from Tommy-R. "The "Tommy Gun" gained great fame in the 1920s and was used to great success in WWII. What caliber was this rotary magazine machine?"

Answer: .45

The "Tommy Gun" was developed during WWI by General John T Thompson. Also known as the Chicago Typewriter, the Thompson Submachine Gun was first demonstrated in public in 1920. The prototype fired around 1,500 rounds a minute.

Tommy-R would like it to be known that he is a peace-loving individual who wishes to disassociate himself from violence in any form.
4. Avin Itofski was brought up in Slough, Berkshire and his Dad is from Scranton, PA, USA. Which TV comedy is set in these two towns, depending on which version you watch?

Answer: The Office / The Office: An American Workplace

"The Office" only ran for two series in the UK (2001-2002), presumably on the principle of always leave 'em wanting more. "Steptoe and Son" ran from 1962-1965 and from 1970-1974. "Till Death Do Us Part" ran from 1966-1975. "Man About The House" ran from 1973-1976.

Avin Itofski does not work for a paper manufacturing company and is a far better dancer than David Brent or Michael Scott. So he says, anyway.
5. J2cp2 lives in San Diego. What is San Diego's nickname?

Answer: America's Finest City

'The West's most Western Town' is Scottsdale, Arizona. The 'Birthplace of Basketball' is Springfield, Massachusetts and the dubious honour of 'Curtain Rod Capital of the World' goes to Sturgis, Michigan.

J2cp2's username is derived from the initials of his family members.
6. A contribution from Mink. "I've was going to be boring and ask for the Latin name for four legged variety of mink. However, I've gone for a horticultural theme instead. Below are four plants, each containing Mink in their name - all you have to do is say which is the odd one out."

Answer: Blue Mink

Blue Mink is a variety of Ageratum houstonianum, also known as the floss plant because it has fluffy blue flowers. It is related to the daisy, grows to about 6" tall and is commonly used as an edging plant for flower beds.

The other "minks", Pink Mink, Yellow Mink and Clear Mink are all varieties of Proteus nerifolia - a beautiful plant originating in South Africa. They can grow to 15 feet across and 6 feet tall and have brightly coloured flowers which are 6 inches long and 3 inches across. Sadly, they are not frost-hardy so I can't grow them in the UK but the Mink Proteas are said to be the easiest to grow of the family if you live in a climate which suits them.

Blue Mink is also the only one of the four to be the name of a 60s/70s' pop group. Mink doesn't have a shameful collection of fur coats at the back of her wardrobe (she loves animals) but she did once have a sleek black cat who answered to the name of Mink.
7. Bottle_rocket supplied the following question: "The 1996 film "Bottle Rocket" was the feature film debut of what acclaimed director?"

Answer: Wes Anderson

A graduate of philosophy at the University of Texas, Wes Anderson reached cult status with "Bottle Rocket" before going on to direct more universally successful films "Rushmore" and "The Royal Tenenbaums". The film also launched the career of two Hollywood stars-Owen Wilson (co-writer) and Luke Wilson. In a special TV presentation Martin Scorsese, sitting alongside Roger Ebert, named "Bottle Rocket" one of his ten favorite films of the 1990s.

Our bottle_rocket denies any criminal activity in his past.
8. In his blurb, Mochyn claims to be a blithe spirit. What was the name of the ghost in the Noel Coward Play 'Blithe Spirit'?

Answer: Elvira

In this play, Charles Condomine and his second wife Ruth are haunted by the ghost of Charles' first wife, Elvira. The film "Blithe Spirit" was released in 1945 and starred Rex Harrison, Constance Cummings, Kay Hammond and Margaret Rutherford.

The word "blithe" can mean
(i) carefree, light hearted
(ii) showing a lack of proper concern

I'm sure Mochyn is referring to the first meaning when he describes himself.
9. A question from MaggieG5: "Maggie Tulliver, one of George Eliot's most spirited heroines, appears in "The Mill on the Floss". Which of these titles was NOT considered by the author in naming the book?"

Answer: Life at the Mill

Published on April 4th 1860, the novel was a critical success. It tells the story of a girl, who, although intelligent and fiercely hungry for knowledge, is denied an education because of her sex. Her love life is no more successful as she falls in love first with the son of her father's sworn enemy, and then with a man who destroys her reputation. Her death is tragic - but, no. I shan't spoil the ending. Read this excellent book and find out for yourself!

Any resemblance between the home lives of MaggieG5 and Maggie Tulliver is purely coincidental.
10. StuHern has contributed the following question: "Herne the Hunter was a legendary antlered figure who was said to roam Windsor Forest. He has been linked to the Celtic horned god, Cernunnos, as well as the Saxon god Woden. He has also been mentioned in many works of literature but in which Shakespeare play is he mentioned?"

Answer: The Merry Wives of Windsor

Herne is said to have been a huntsman serving Richard II. When the king was attacked by a white hart, Herne saved him but was mortally wounded while doing so. A wizard restored his health by affixing the deer's antlers to his head. In return, Herne had to give up his hunting skills. Herne couldn't face living without hunting and ran off into Windsor Forest. He was later found hanging from a tree, antlers still in place.

StuHern remains tight-lipped about rumours that he runs madly through Windsor Forest, antlered or otherwise.
11. As mentioned in McGruff's blurb, he lives in a place surrounded by Civil War history. He has contributed the following: "The first major engagement on Northern soil and the bloodiest single day battle of the American Civil War took place on September 17, 1862, just eighteen days after a Confederate victory 40 miles to the southeast in Manassas, Virginia. What is the name of this Northern battle?"

Answer: The Battle of Antietam

Twenty-three thousand soldiers were killed, wounded or missing in action on the first day of the battle, nine times as many Americans killed or wounded on D-Day in World War II.

McGruff owns a 150+ year old house in Maryland, adjacent to the Antietam battlegrounds. Originally a gunsmith shop officially dated at 1856, there is evidence part of it may have been constructed as early as 1821. McGruff would like to stress that he is not the original owner of this house.
12. One of the Joliettes goes by the intriguing username of billygoat4. Which of these is the common name of the breed of goat known as the Myotonic Goat?

Answer: Tennessee Fainting Goat

The Myotonic Goat is also known as the "Wooden Leg" or "Stiff Leg" Goat. Most animals run when they are scared or excited, but this particular goat stiffens up and often falls over under these circumstances.

Billygoat4 does not run or faint in the face of danger.
13. Mos623 takes his name from Mos Def. Although probably best known as a rap artist Mos Def has also acted in over thirty films and TV series. What role did he play in the 2005 film "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy"?

Answer: Ford Prefect

Arthur Dent was played by Martin Freeman (Tim Canterbury in "The Office"), Humma Kavula was played by John Malkovitch and The Narrator was voiced by Stephen Fry.

Our mos623 and his namesake, Mos Def, are "lyrically handsome". For Mos Def, this is an apt way of saying that five syllable words can and will be used for music's sake. For our mos623, "lyrically handsome" is just another way to say that he has a great face for radio.
14. I'm Supersal1 and as can be seen from my blurb, I am an Essex Girl. Which Essex town claims the title of Britain's oldest recorded town?

Answer: Colchester

The Romans built a fort in Colchester in about 44 AD. When the Roman soldiers withdrew from the fort (erroneously believing that the local population had been subdued) it was taken over by civilians and turned into a town, whose Roman name was Camulodunum, from the Celtic god of war Camulos and the Roman name for fort, dunum. In 60 AD Queen Boudica led her rebellion through the town, massacaring the population and burning the town to the ground. It is said that if you dig deep enough anywhere in Colchester you will find the 'Boudica Layer', a layer of red soot where the town was burned. In the basement of the George Hotel in the town there is a hole in the wall (now protected by a pane of glass) where this layer is clearly visible. In true Essex fashion Colchester bounced back and and today is a large and thriving town. It still remains a garrison town and is home to the University of Essex.

Though I may have rampaged through many an Essex town in my mis-spent youth, I don't recall burning any of them to the ground.
15. This question is supplied by MaggieG5, she does it so well. "The Joliettes took their team name from a book created by the incredibly fertile imagination of the late, great, and irreplaceable Douglas Adams. "The Meaning of Liff" is, according to its introduction, a "dictionary of things that there aren't any words for yet". The book was a collaborative effort between Douglas and a friend, very well known in the field of comedy. Who was this collaborator?"

Answer: John Lloyd

John Lloyd attended Cambridge University at the same time as Douglas Adams and they became firm friends and later flatmates. Lloyd created several radio programmes of note while working for the BBC including "The News Quiz" and "The News Huddlines". He later became more famous for creating "Not the Nine O' Clock News" and was the creative genius behind "Spitting Image", as well as producing the "Blackadder" series.

And the Joliette name? Well if you want to know what it means, you must look it up for yourself!
