Question 1 of 10
1. The scene: Korea, 1953. The 4077th Mobile Army Surgical Hospital, currently located a few miles outside of Uijongbu, just north of Seoul. We're inside the tent of Major Margaret "Hot Lips" Houlihan, the Head Nurse of the 4077th MASH. A woman of strong contrasts, Major Houlihan's tent reflects its sole resident. The tent and its furnishings are austere and pure army-issue, obviously the quarters of a veteran, no-nonsense Army Medical Corps professional. Yet there is no doubt this tent also houses a woman of burning passions; the flimsy negligee and silk stockings drying on the line hardly seem out of place alongside the Major's formidable white bras and olive drab uniforms. Perhaps we should have heeded the warning posted on the door: "Knock Before Entering". Now that the Major has returned and sternly evicted us from the premises, how do we find our way back to Hot Lips' tent, and its captivating occupant?

Loretta Swit is best known as Major Margaret "Hot Lips" Houlihan from the classic CBS television series "M*A*S*H". Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
But in 1981, Loretta and Stuart Margolin both co-starred in a Blake Edwards comedy that lampooned the Hollywood motion picture industry. The film starred Julie Andrews, Richard Mulligan and William Holden. What was its title?

Answer: S.O.B.

In "S.O.B.", Loretta played Polly Reed, an overbearing gossip columnist; Stuart portrayed Gary Murdock, personal assistant to movie star Sally Miles (Julie Andrews). The film told the story of a major Hollywood film director, Felix Farmer (Richard Mulligan), who was struggling desperately to salvage his failed family musical, "Nightwind". Farmer's innovative solution? Remake the movie as a soft adult film, with his own wife (wholesome, squeaky-clean actress Sally Miles) appearing topless in the climactic scene. In real life, Julie Andrews was the wife of director Blake Edwards, and her own public image was every bit as pure and virginal as her character Sally Miles, thanks to starring roles in such films as "The Sound of Music" and "Mary Poppins". Julie created quite a stir in 1981 when she actually bared her breasts in "S.O.B."

"M*A*S*H" Connection: Stuart Margolin made two guest appearances on "M*A*S*H". He played Captain Mandel Sherman, a visiting psychiatrist, in the first season episode "Bananas, Crackers and Nuts". Dr. Sherman was summoned by acting CO Frank Burns to examine Hawkeye for signs of mental illness. In the second season, Stuart Margolin returned again to the 4077th MASH, this time in the role of Dr. Stanley Robbins, a renowned plastic surgeon. Hawkeye and Trapper convinced Dr. Robbins to perform a nose job on an enlisted man (in violation of U.S. Army regulations, naturally), in exchange for a blind date with a sexy mystery nurse they dubbed "the barracuda".
2. Stuart Margolin and Rene Auberjonois both appeared in a 1976 spoof of disaster films, which also starred Joseph Bologna, Richard Mulligan and Sally Kellerman. Which parody was it?

Answer: The Big Bus

"The Big Bus" was one of the first movies to spoof the 1970s disaster film genre. It was set aboard the Cyclops, a giant nuclear powered bus (complete with an on-board bowling alley and swimming pool!) making its maiden trip from New York to Denver, with Joseph Bologna at the wheel. Rene Auberjonois portrayed Father Kudos, a doubting priest, and Stuart Margolin played Alex, a villain bent on sabotaging the nuclear powered bus to protect the big oil interests. Richard Mulligan and Sally Kellerman co-starred as an estranged couple, Claude and Sybil Crane, who were among the passengers on the Cyclops.

"M*A*S*H" Connection: Rene Auberjonois played the priest, Father John Patrick "Dago Red" Mulcahy in Robert Altman's 1970 motion picture "MASH". And, of course, Sally Kellerman was the original Hot Lips, although the character's name was actually "Margaret O'Houlihan" in the film version. Sally's portrayal of Hot Lips was arguably her most memorable screen performance, and earned her a 1971 Academy Award nomination for Best Actress in a Supporting Role.
3. G.W. Bailey starred as Captain Thaddeus Harris in the long series of "Police Academy" films. Rene Auberjonois co-starred with him in which "Police Academy" sequel?

Answer: Police Academy 5: Assignment: Miami Beach

In "Assignment: Miami Beach", the fourth sequel to "Police Academy", Captain Harris and the squad visited Miami Beach, where Commandant Eric Lassard (George Gaynes) was being honored as "Police Officer of the Decade". Naturally, Harris wasn't there to applaud Lassard; he was plotting to take his job as head of the Police Academy. Meanwhile, Commandant Lassard stumbled onto a jewelry theft ring led by Tony Stark (Rene Auberjonois) and managed to get himself kidnapped in the process, forcing the police misfits to stage a rescue.

"M*A*S*H" Connection: Who could forget Sergeant Luther Rizzo, that bastion of the Bayou, and chief monkey wrench of the 4077th MASH motor pool? G.W. (short for George W.) played the recurring character Luther Rizzo during the last four seasons of "M*A*S*H". He also appeared as an unnamed drunken soldier in the eighth season episode "Captain's Outrageous".
4. Mariette Hartley and G.W. Bailey co-starred together on a short-lived CBS sitcom in the early 1980s. Both worked on a Boston television news program. Bill Bixby starred, and also produced the series. Which series was it?

Answer: Goodnight, Beantown

Mariette Hartley and Bill Bixby co-starred as Jennifer ("Jenny") Barnes and Matt Cassidy, co-anchors of the WYN evening news in Boston. G.W. Bailey played their news director, Albert Addelson. "Goodnight, Beantown" lasted for parts of two seasons on CBS in 1983 and 1984, filming only 18 episodes.

"M*A*S*H" Connection: Mariette Hartley delivered one of the most memorable guest performances in the history of "M*A*S*H". In the seventh season episode "Inga", Mariette portrayed visiting Swedish surgeon Dr. Inga Helversen. Inga's superior medical knowledge and surgical skills quickly upstaged both Dr. Benjamin Franklin Pierce and Dr. Charles Emerson Winchester, leaving them with a pair of badly bruised male egos.
5. Mariette Hartley and James B. Sikking both had supporting roles in one of the four "Magnificent Seven" western films. Which one?

Answer: The Magnificent Seven Ride!

"Ride!" was the third sequel to the 1960 classic "The Magnificent Seven", and arguably the least faithful to the original formula. Mariette Hartley played Arilla Adams, the wife of Marshal Chris Adams (Lee Van Cleef), and James B. Sikking filled the role of Captain Andy Hayes, one of "the seven".

"M*A*S*H" Connection: James B. Sikking - perhaps best known for his role as pipe-smoking SWAT Lieutenant Howard Hunter from the NBC police drama "Hill Street Blues" - made a single guest appearance on "M*A*S*H", in the first season episode "Tuttle". He played an Army Finance Officer who was assigned to investigate the legend of Captain Jonathan S. Tuttle, a mythical surgeon invented by Hawkeye Pierce and Trapper John McIntyre.
6. James B. Sikking had a supporting role in a 1980 drama that starred Donald Sutherland, Mary Tyler Moore, and Timothy Hutton as the dysfunctional Jarrett family. The film was directed by Robert Redford and won four Oscars, including Best Picture. What was its title?

Answer: Ordinary People

"Ordinary People" was a very heavy drama that explored the strained relationships of the Jarrett family, Calvin (Donald Sutherland), Beth (Mary Tyler Moore), and their son Conrad (Timothy Hutton), following the death of the family's eldest son. James B. Sikking played the supporting character Ray Hanley. "Ordinary People" was nominated for six Academy Awards in 1981, and won four, including Best Picture, and Best Director honors for Robert Redford.

"M*A*S*H" Connection: Donald Sutherland portrayed the original Hawkeye Pierce in the motion picture "MASH". The role earned him a 1971 Golden Globe nomination for Best Motion Picture Actor - Musical/Comedy.
7. Donald Sutherland and Robert Duvall starred with Michael Caine in a 1976 WWII adventure directed by John Sturges. The film told the story of a German plot to parachute into England and kidnap British Prime Minister Winston Churchill. Name the film.

Answer: The Eagle Has Landed

Michael Caine portrayed Colonel Kurt Steiner, a disgraced German paratroop officer who had opposed the Nazi mistreatment of Jews. Following a feasibility study prepared by Lt. Col. Max Radl (Robert Duvall), Col. Steiner was assigned the unenviable task of leading a paratroop team on the mission to kidnap Churchill. Donald Sutherland played Liam Devlin, a member of the Irish Republican Army, and a Nazi sympathizer. The motion picture was based on Jack Higgins' novel of the same name.

"M*A*S*H" Connection: The least-likeable member of the 4077th MASH, Major Frank Burns (or "Ferret Face" as he was so often called in the television version). Robert Duvall portrayed Frank Burns in the motion picture "MASH", setting the stage for the memorable affair between Frank and Hot Lips during the early years of the television series.
8. Blythe Danner played the role of Lillian Meechum in a 1979 drama based on a novel written by Pat Conroy. Lillian's husband, Bull Meechum, was a highly competitive military pilot portrayed by Robert Duvall. Michael O'Keefe co-starred as Ben, the oldest of their four children. What was the name of this film, which explored Bull's often stormy relationship with his family?

Answer: The Great Santini

Robert Duvall gave a strong performance as Bull Meechum, the self-proclaimed "Great Santini". Unfortunately, Meechum's background as a rigid, tough-as-nails U.S. Marine fighter pilot didn't serve him well when it came to dealing with his own family. Lillian Meechum (Blythe Danner) often found herself in the role of peacemaker between Bull and their four children, particularly eldest son Ben (Michael O'Keefe). Their performances earned Robert Duvall and Michael O'Keefe 1981 Academy Award nominations for Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor.

"M*A*S*H" Connection: In the fourth season episode "The More I See You", Blythe Danner guest starred as Carlye Breslin, a beautiful new nurse assigned to the 4077th. Carlye also happened to be Hawkeye's former (and now married) live-in girlfriend, stirring old emotions and difficulties for them both. Michael O'Keefe provides a second connection of his own: he made two guest appearances on "M*A*S*H", in the third season episode "Mad Dogs and Servicemen", and the sixth season episode "War of Nerves", playing a mentally troubled young soldier in both.
9. Early in her film career, Blythe Danner co-starred in the 1972 drama, "To Kill a Clown". She played the role of Lily Frischer, wife of Timothy Frischer (Heath Lamberts). The Frischers rented a secluded beach cabin, not realizing that the cabin's owner was also a psychotic. To find your way back to Hot Lips' tent and Loretta Swit, identify which of her "M*A*S*H" co-stars played the Frischers' decidedly unpleasant landlord.

Answer: Alan Alda

The Frischers - a hippy couple - rented the cabin as a getaway location, hoping to patch-up their shaky marriage. Alan Alda portrayed Major Evelyn Ritchie, a disabled veteran and their sadistic landlord, complete with a bizarre disposition and a pair of vicious Doberman attack dogs.

Alan Alda, of course, starred as Hawkeye Pierce on "M*A*S*H", which brings us full circle back to Loretta Swit, and here we are, back inside Hot Lips' tent. There was a time when Captain Benjamin Franklin Pierce would not have been a welcome vistor to the Major's tent, but Hawkeye and Margaret eventually grew to be close friends during their time together at the 4077th. Alan and Loretta share the distinction of being the only "M*A*S*H" stars to endure for the entire eleven year run of the series, from the 1972 pilot episode to the 1983 finale, "Goodbye, Farewell and Amen". Alan appeared in all 251 episodes of "M*A*S*H", and Loretta appeared in 234.
10. Bonus Loretta Swit Question: After portraying Margaret Houlihan for the first eight seasons of "M*A*S*H", Loretta actually wanted to leave the series to pursue another lead television role. Loretta had starred in a TV movie which served as the pilot for a successful CBS police drama, and she hoped to play the same character on the show itself. Which series did Loretta aspire to star in?

Answer: Cagney & Lacey

Loretta Swit starred as Detective Christine Cagney in the 1981 TV movie "Cagney & Lacey", pilot for the series of the same name. Once CBS picked-up the series, Loretta sought release from her contract on "M*A*S*H", but 20th Century Fox declined to grant her request. "Cagney & Lacey" ran for seven seasons on CBS, from 1982 to 1988, and spawned several subsequent TV movies. The role of Christine Cagney initially went to Meg Foster; she was replaced by Sharon Gless after the first season. Tyne Daly co-starred as Detective Mary Beth Lacey.

Loretta Swit was born on November 4, 1937, in Passaic, New Jersey. Her signature role as Margaret Houlihan earned Loretta four Golden Globe nominations, and seven Emmy Award nominations; she twice won the coveted Emmy, in 1980 and 1982. Aside from "M*A*S*H", Loretta has enjoyed a very successful stage career, in addition to starring in numerous motion pictures and TV movies. Away from the screen and stage, Loretta has a passion for animals, and has served as a board member for Actors and Others For Animals, and several other animal rights organizations; her work in that area has earned her recognition from both the Animal Protection Institute, and the International Fund For Animal Welfare.
