My Mistake-Ridden Vacation Diary Quiz

We recently vacationed out west in 2002, and I kept a diary of our trip. When I showed it to my wife, she said there were lots of mistakes in it, one in each paragraph. She suggested I ask my fellow trivia nuts to spot the incorrect sentences.

3. 1. Our next stop was Virginia City, which is located on a mountainside not far from Reno. 2. Virginia City started as a boom town but did not become a ghost town. 3. The boom was caused by the discovery of a major deposit of silver and gold called the Comstock Lode. 4. The Comstock Lode was discovered in 1759. (The mistake is in . . .)

The Comstock Lode was discovered in 1859, 11 years after the gold strike at Sutter's Mill in California.

The city sometimes was the scene of the show's action. 4. Today many buildings from the wild and woolly 19th century still stand in Virginia City. (The mistake is in . . .)

Answer: Sentence 1

Virginia City figured in the old TV show "Bonanza." It wasn't far from the Ponderosa ranch, home of the Cartwrights. "Cartwright" means a person who makes carts. Seriously.
5. 1. We also drove through Carson City, the capital of Nevada. 2. Carson City is either directly or indirectly named after explorer and frontiersman Kit Carson. 3. The mint was built and turned out gold and silver coins. These coins with the CC mint mark are rare and greatly prized by numismatists today.

Three of the casinos are Caesar's, Harrah's, and Bill's. 4. The town of Incline Village is the rest of the tourist area, on the California side of the state line. (The mistake is in . . . )

Answer: Sentence 4

The California town is called South Lake Tahoe. It's very easy to tell where the state line is since the casinos extend right up to it. Incline Village is on the Nevada side, on the north end of the lake. It's the home of the Ponderosa Ranch tourist attraction.
8. Sunday, Sept. 29. Today we drove to Yosemite National Park. 1. Yosemite is in California. 2. There's been a major problem at Yosemite with bears breaking into cars, tents, and campers to get at food, but it has improved a lot in the early years of the 21st century because of a visitor education and enforcement program. 3. Three of the famous mountains in Yosemite are Half Dome, El Capitan, and Pike's Peak. 4. Some of the park's famous waterfalls dry up at certain times of the year. (The mistake is in . . .)

Answer: Sentence 3

Half Dome and El Capitan are in Yosemite, but Pike's Peak is in Colorado, near Colorado Springs.
9. Tuesday, October First. Today we drove to Salinas. 1. Salinas is in the fertile Salinas Valley, known as "the Salad Bowl of the Nation." 2. Pebble Beach, one of the world's top golf meccas, is a stop on the drive. (The mistake is in . . .)

Answer: Sentence 3

The drive is partly in Pacific Grove, partly in Carmel, AKA Carmel-by-the-Sea. The city of Santa Cruz is some miles north of the peninsula, on Monterey Bay. That's all we have room for now. The rest of our trip will be covered in the next installment. Hope you enjoyed my quiz. Bye. Mickey.
