Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the 2010 video game "Darksiders" what is the name for War's horse?

Answer: Ruin

War starts the game without his horse Ruin. They find each other in the demon's coliseum and are pitted against each other. War kills the demon riding Ruin, however Ruin is still in a state of rage. War refuses to fight his steed, despite the Watcher commanding him to do so. Ruin charges into War and passes straight through him, this act helps Ruin to remember his master allowing War to mount him. In the game Ruin was vital for swift movement around the Ashlands level and to defeat The Stygian, the king of the Ashworms.

2. Animals gather in variously named collectives. Which of the following, as a group, is called an army?

Answer: Caterpillar

As a collective, ants, frogs and herring are also known as an army. In keeping with the war theme monkeys, apes, kangaroos, ostriches, lions, foxes and bison, among other things, gather as a troop.

A group of caterpillars is also seen as a constituency. Bears gather as a sleuth, alligators as a congregation and male cheetahs form a coalition.

3. Leo Tolstoy's epic novel "War and Peace" has which series of wars as its backdrop? Long novel and years of battle - maybe the answer is the only short thing found here.

Answer: Napoleonic Wars

"War and Peace" was published in 1869 and was set during the Napoleonic Wars. It details the events surrounding France's invasion of Russia in 1812 and the effect this had on Tsarist Russia's aristocrats and society. Historically, the ultimate failure of the French in Russia led to the downfall of Napoleon and the restoration of the Bourbon monarchy in France.

Tolstoy served in the Crimean War which was fought between 1853 and 1856. He used his knowledge of how the Russian army is structured along with extensive research to create his epic novel of historical fiction of the Napoleonic Wars waged between 1803 and 1815.

The Seven Years war was fought between 1756 and 1763 among the great European powers. These wars saw the dominance of Great Britain in overseas colonization and Prussia becoming a powerful force in Europe.

Tolstoy died in 1910 and never saw the outbreak of World War 1 which began in 1914 and lasted through 1918.

4. In the TV series "Supernatural", what is the name of the episode from season five, where War from the four horsemen makes his appearance? (Or as Edwin Starr sang, "I said War, huh _____")

Answer: Good God Y'All

War is the first horsemen of the apocalypse that Sam and Dean encounter in the episode "Good God Y'All". War is making the inhabitants of a small town believe that the townsfolk are demons and they start fighting each other. In the episode War's car is a 1965 Red Mustang, which is a reference to him being the Red Rider from the Book of Revelation. The rest of the horsemen are met throughout season five, Death being the only one to appear in later seasons.

The lyrics from Edwin Starr's Number One hit song "War" are: "I said War, huh good God y'all. What is it good for? Absolutely nothing, just say it again".

5. "Porky's Hare Hunt" (1938) introduces a rabbit who utters the immortal line "Of course you realize, this means war", previously made famous by which actor in the movie "A Night at the Opera"?

Answer: Groucho Marx

"Porky's Hare Hunt" was a short animation directed by Ben "Bugs" Hardaway and it features Porky Pig hunting a carrot-stealing rabbit. The rabbit in this short would evolve to become Bugs Bunny (and Warner Bros' biggest star) and the "war" phrase would become one of Bugs' often quoted lines. Bugs Bunny would make his official debut in the July, 1940 cartoon "A Wild Hare".

The quote, as shown above, was uttered by Groucho Marx in "A Night at the Opera" (1935) and it shouldn't be confused with a similar line that he used, "This means war", which was quoted several times in the 1933 film "Duck Soup" and again in "A Day at the Races" (1937).

6. Revelation Chapter 12 tells the story of the war in heaven between Michael and the devil, aka Satan. There are three phrases used in this chapter to describe the devil. Of the four listed below which one is INCORRECT?

Answer: The warlord of the damned

The warlord of the damned does not appear in this chapter nor anywhere else in the Bible. Revelation 12:7-17 tells of this war in heaven between Michael and his angels and Satan and his angels. Satan loses and is thrown down to earth. Verse 17 ends with him making war on the woman who gave birth to the male child, Christ. This passage parallels Old Testament passages found in Daniel (10:13-14), Isaiah (14:4-17), and Ezekiel (28). According to the teaching of many churches, this passage also parallels the fall of Satan at the beginning of creation.

7. The Portuguese Man O' War resembles which of the following creatures?

Answer: Jellyfish

Also known as a bluebottle, it has venomous tentacles and, whilst it looks like a jellyfish, it isn't. A jellyfish is a single creature whereas the Man O' War is a collection of minute zooids that attach to one another. They become what is called a "colonial organism" and depend on each for survival, separated they die.

8. The Seven Military Classics is an anthology of ancient Chinese military texts, including Sunzi's famous "Art of War". Which of the following is NOT one of them?

Answer: Dream of the Red Chamber

Sunzi is the pinyin name of the author better known in the West as Sun Tzu. Other texts included in The Seven Military Classics are "Wuzi" by Wu Qi, "Wei Liaozi" and "Questions and Replies between Tang Taizong and Li Weigong". The Seven Military Classics focuses on military tactics, strategies and warfare. Six of these texts date from the Spring and Autumn Period (771 BC - 476 BC) and the Warring States Period (475 BC - 221 BC). "Questions and Replies between Tang Taizong and Li Weigong" was produced during the Tang Dynasty (618 AD - 907 AD). In modern times, businessmen and leaders such as General Douglas MacArthur and Mao Zedong have been inspired by the contents of this body of work.

"Dream of the Red Chamber" is a fictional Chinese novel considered to be one of the Four Great Classical Novels in China. It centres on the rise and fall of two branches of an aristocratic family in 17th-century China.

10. Edwin Starr's version of the song "War" released in 1970 was one of the most popular protest songs to come out of the Vietnam era. Which rocker covered the song in 1985 to protest the Reagan era foreign policy?

Answer: Bruce Springsteen

Interestingly, the song "War" was originally recorded by the Temptations but fear of backlash from the Temptations more conservative fans led the Motown label to withhold their version and instead record a version with Edwin Starr. The song became Starr's greatest hit and signature song. It reached Number One on the US Billboard Hot 100, number three on the US Billboard R&B chart, and number three on the UK Singles chart.

Springsteen first began singing his rock version of the song in 1985 and released it a year later as a single. It reached number eight on the US Billboard Hot 100 and number 19 on the UK Singles chart. Springsteen continued to sing the song throughout the 80s before retiring it in the 90s. When the Iraq War broke out he again began singing it in protest.
