Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Australians are known for their love of sport. Tezza was an avid follower of arguably Australia's most popular winter sport, Australian Rules football. She was particularly proud of the prominent role of Aboriginal players in this game. Which Western Australian team, admitted into the AFL in 1994, did she support in the national league?

Answer: Fremantle Dockers

Fremantle Dockers (Freo) are one of the two Western Australian-based clubs in the Australian Football League. They have appeared in the finals series in 2003, 2006, 2010 and 2012.

Her quiz "Indigenous AFL Stars" covers this subject extremely well.

2. Tezza was a proud Western Australian and her interests were influenced by the unique climatic effects present around her town of Kojonup. It lies in the area of Western Australia known as the Great Southern. South Western Australia lies in a region with which climate classification? (There are only five other regions of this type in the world.)

Answer: Mediterranean Climate

Mediterranean climates have hot, dry summers (except in the areas immediately on the coast) and moderate, rainy winters. Kojonup lies inland about 150km from Albany on Australia's South West coast. It was a centre of settlement due to the presence of a freshwater spring. It is an area of pastoral farming and bush and is known for its wildflowers. It was the first shire in W.A. to have one million sheep.

Tezza has a number of quizzes on Western Australia including "A Trip Around Western Australia".

3. One of Tezza's favourite Australian singers and songwriters was Paul Kelly. What is the title of his first solo album release in 1985?

Answer: Post

Paul Kelly has been a popular musician in Australia since the 1980s. His songs often deal with political and humanitarian issues, particularly his concern for the Aboriginal people. In this respect, his lyrics are stirring and thoughtful.
He is considered one of Australia's most influential and versatile musicians. Kelly's work includes rock, country, bluegrass and folk music and he has toured extensively throughout the Australian continent.

Tezza's quiz on the Paul Kelly song "From Little Things (Big Things Grow)" exemplifies this lyrical quality.

4. Tezza loved raising cows on her farm and felt great joy with each new birth. What kind of cows, whose name gives a clue to its tolerance for hot weather, was Tezza breeding?

Answer: Droughtmasters

Tezza bred her Droughtmasters with Red Angus resulting in attractive chestnut-coloured cows. They are gentle animals known for their adaptability, heat and parasite tolerance. Her favorite was "Amber" who she referred to as "my special girl". Tezza would sometimes spend hours in the field enjoying the land and the company of her cows. In July 2011 she proudly announced the births of ten healthy calves in ten days. The other breeds listed are also found throughout Australia.

Answer: Red and Green

Anigozanthos manglesii, commonly known as the red and green Kangaroo Paw (or Mangles Kangaroo Paw), is the floral emblem of Western Australia. Guinness, founded in 1759 in Dublin, had a 9,000 year lease on its property at the rate of 45 Irish pounds per year. The company eventually bought out its lease and in 1997 announced plans to build a new brewery and sell the old brewery and land for development. The Dublin City Council threatened to pass a resolution disallowing any future development on the land. Guinness management decided to keep the facility open.

7. Tezza's interest in music extended far and wide. In Christmas 2008 the UK charts had the unusual situation of positions 1 and 2 being cover versions of the same song. The song was 'Hallelujah', the Number 1 spot was held by "The X-Factor" winner Alexandra Burke and the Number 2 spot was held by the late, great Jeff Buckley. Who wrote this song?

'Hallelujah' first appeared on Cohen's 1984 album 'Various Positions'. The song has been covered by many artists, most notably John Cale, k.d. lang, Rufus Wainwright and, as mentioned above, Jeff Buckley and Alexandra Burke.

8. One of Tezza's favorite Australian poets was Henry Lawson. His first published work appeared in The Bulletin dated 1st October, 1887, and began with the lines: "Sons of the South, awake! arise!/Sons of the South, and do./Banish from under your bonny skies/Those old-world errors and wrongs and lies/Making a hell in a Paradise/That belongs to your sons and you." What was the title of this poem, which reflected his political views at the time?

Answer: A Song of the Republic

Henry Lawson was born in Grenfell, New South Wales in 1867. A childhood illness left him almost totally deaf, yet he went on to write over 600 poems. In later life, Lawson, a chronic alcoholic, was reduced to begging on the streets of Sydney. Despite being the most celebrated Australian writer of his time, he died penniless in 1922. He was the subject of an Australian postage stamp in 1949, and appeared on the first $10 note when Australia adopted decimal currency in 1966.

Tezza's quiz "Henry Lawson - Australian Poet and Writer" is a great introduction to this important author.

10. Tezza embarked upon her chosen career at the age of 17 and continued in it for almost 30 years. With her love of people and endless generosity of spirit, can you decide what profession she chose?

Answer: Nurse

Tezza chose nursing. She loved nature and reading, and was a gifted writer, but nursing won, and she still missed it even 15 years after she retired. In her own words (from her FT blog),
"My initial training was as a nurse, three years, hospital based, and I worked as a nurse in a small country hospital, and as a volunteer ambulance officer with responsibility for First Aid training for the best part of twenty five years."

She worked in health and safety, lectured on first aid, was a nurse in an abattoir, worked in an employment agency, volunteered with people who were unemployed, and continued to build on her skills until she eventually accepted a job as a Community Development Project Officer in Western Australia. Somehow she also found time to read and raise farm animals.
