Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. My scooter is an Italian scooter - a Piaggio. Windows does not recognise this word. What is one of the words that Windows spellchecker tries to persuade me I meant to write?

Answer: DiMaggio

Yes, Windows desperately tries to persuade me I really own a blue, 125cc baseball player, once married to Marilyn Monroe and immortalised in the song 'Mrs. Robinson'. Of the wrong answers, Pinot Grigot is a type of wine, Topo Gigio was a cute mouse from TV and I made P Adagio up (although adagio is a musical term meaning in a slow tempo).
2. Another popular Italian scooter make is Vespa - what does this mean in Italian?

Answer: Wasp

According to Vespa's website, 'On Tuesday 19 December, the 100,000th Vespa scooter to be assembled in 2006 came off the production line.' That's a lot of scooters! Enrico Piaggio, the son of the Piaggio founder, felt that the scooter looked like a wasp - hence the name. Piaggio are still manufacturing Vespas.
3. As I lay in the road after being hit by a car while on my scooter, the attending police and ambulance men wouldn't let me take my helmet off and I was strapped to a 'spinal board' before they'd remove my helmet. Why was that?

Answer: They thought I might have broken my neck.

You shouldn't usually remove a motorcyclist's helmet until their spine is immobilised - it could make any spinal injury much worse. However, if they are not breathing or vomiting with a risk of choking, it must be done. Apparently I was complaining about my neck hurting, so I had to be strapped to a spinal board. I'm okay though - but I do have terrible posture!
4. I'm one of those weird people that name my cars etc. My blue Piaggio Skipper naturally lent itself to being called after this Australian marsupial - who actually had his own TV series from 1966 to 1968 - with many, many repeats. So I call my scooter 'Skippy'. What was Skippy?

Answer: Kangaroo

'Skippy, Skippy, Skippy the bush kangaroo...' It was amazing how every human being Skippy ran into always understood every word that he said - or rather didn't.
5. As I was able to walk after my accident, the doctors declined the chance to use Wilhelm Roentgen's discovery to look at my foot. What DIDN'T they use?

Answer: X-Rays

X-rays were discovered by Wilhelm Roentgen while experimenting with cathode rays. As I was able to walk, they decided my foot probably wasn't broken, but if it was still hurting in three days, I had to go back.
6. If I had broken a bone in my foot, I would have been in very good company. Which England football star sent the press into a frenzy by fracturing his second metatarsal on 10 April 2002, just before the World Cup?

Answer: David Beckham

All the above footballers have fractured a metatarsal in their careers (the metatarsals are the long bones in the foot) but Beckham (naturally) got the most publicity. Looking at a diagram of the foot, if I've broken anything, it's possibly my cuboid - far more exclusive!
7. At least the lady who knocked me off stayed to give her details - unlike the person who hit my car last year and drove off. What is that type of collision known as?

Answer: Hit and Run

A 'hit and run' is an accident where the driver doesn't stop, and it is common if the perpetrators don't have a licence, or insurance. It is very annoying. Of the wrong answers, a cut and shut is two cars that have been made into one, a wash and go is a two-in-one shampoo and conditioner and a Pushmepullyou is a Doctor Dolittle animal.
8. Although my motorcycle helmet hit the road hard, and it has a little crack in it, it'll be okay to use on my scooter again, won't it?

Answer: No

No, never. If your helmet has suffered any sort of damage, or even if you've dropped it onto a hard surface of as little as 3ft/1m, you must replace it. Even if the damage only looks superficial, the structural integrity could have been compromised. I escaped with concussion - a fractured skull would have been much worse.
9. Although I wasn't badly injured in the accident, I suspect that I stretched and tore some of the soft tissues in my neck (tendons, ligaments and muscles). What is this type of injury NOT known as?

Answer: Cutaneous leishmaniasis

Whiplash, as it is commonly known, is a very common problem in accidents. I already have some of the symptoms, including pain and stiffness in my neck, headache, tingling in the arms going down into the hands and dizziness. Cutaneous leishmaniasis is a parasitic skin disease of kangaroos - as far as I know, I haven't got that!
10. As to the title of this quiz - 'Just another RTA'. I was hit by a car on my scooter. What does the acronym RTA stand for in this situation?

Answer: Road Traffic Accident

In the UK in 2004, police recorded 280,840 casualties due to RTAs - of which 3,221 were fatal - equivalent to nine deaths every day (Department of Transport, 2005a). So I was lucky. Be careful out there!
