Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which river is NOT used for travel by freighters in the Great Lakes Seaway Navigation System, between Lake Superior and the Atlantic Ocean? You'll fall over when you see the answer.

Answer: Niagara River

The Niagara River flows over Niagara Falls so no ships will use that river. Ships travel through the locks on the Welland Canal to bypass the falls, and exit or enter at Port Weller/St. Catharines on Lake Ontario and Port Colborne on Lake Erie. St. Marys River, no apostrophe, also has a series of locks at Sault Ste. Marie between Lake Superior and Lake Huron.

2. This massive dam, a symbol of Egyptian nationalism, was built on the Nile between 1960-70. What is the name of this dam?

Answer: Aswan High Dam

The Aswan High Dam holds back the Nile's yearly floods, utilising these waters for irrigation and hydroelectricity. It was built by Egypt's president Nasser shortly after independence from Great Britain, with funding ultimately provided by the USSR. The huge Three Gorges Dam is in China; there is a fairly small White Nile Dam in Sudan (but the White Nile river joins the Blue Nile in Sudan to form the Nile, so the White Nile itself doesn't reach Egypt); and there's no Ascus Dam but there is Damascus, the capital of Syria.

3. Which of these nations on the Indian Ocean is primarily made up of atolls?

Answer: Maldives

All the answer choices are in or border on the Indian Ocean, and all either wholly or partly consist of islands. But only the Maldives is predominantly made up of atolls, which are ring-shaped coral reefs or chains of islets that surround shallow lagoons. Situated in the Arabian Sea (in the Indian Ocean), the Maldives' atolls are primarily coral and are among the world's largest and most widely dispersed (about 115 sq mi or 298 sq km); they support a variety of marine ecosystems. None of the atolls rise beyond 6 feet (1.2 m) above sea level, which is why the Maldivian government has been concerned with global warming and rising ocean levels.

It is also why the tsunami of 2004 was particularly devastating for the island republic. The striking geography of the Maldives has made tourism an important part of the country's economy.

5. In Canada, the body of water north of the provinces of Ontario and Quebec, known as James Bay, is part of which much larger bay?

Answer: Hudson Bay

James Bay, part of the Arctic Archipelago Marine Ecozone, sits off the south end of Hudson Bay. While James Bay was named in honor of the English explorer who explored it in 1630 - 1631, Hudson Bay received its honorary name from the great explorer Henry Hudson who discovered it in 1610.

6. According to "The World Atlas 2021," which US state capital is the largest in terms of land area?

The City of Juneau, Alaska, spreads over 2716.7 square miles. Oklahoma City comes in second at 607 square miles. Phoenix has only 474.9 square miles but is much more populous than the others. Nashville is close behind in area at 473.3. Indianapolis, Indiana, is fifth at 361.5 square miles.

7. Which of these historical regions of Europe - whose name might remind you of a free and easy lifestyle - is famous for its glass and crystal?

Answer: Bohemia

Bohemia (meaning "home of the Boii", a Celtic tribe that once inhabited the area) is the westernmost of the historical regions of the Czech Republic. In the Middle Ages, Bohemia was for many centuries a largely autonomous kingdom within the Holy Roman Empire; at the end of World War I, it became the core of the new country of Czechoslovakia. Glassmaking developed in Bohemia during the Renaissance, and for a time the products of this industry enjoyed a reputation superior to that of Venetian glassware. Bohemian glass workers specialized in glass cutting and engraving: their magnificent chandeliers became especially sought after by aristocratic and wealthy patrons. Glassware is still produced in the Czech Republic; items crafted by the luxury brand Moser with lead-free, sodium-potassium glass are especially prized for their high quality and durability. Small glass beads (called "druk"), produced in a variety of colours and finishes, are also very popular with crafters.

The three historical regions listed as wrong answers are found in Germany (Bavaria), Ukraine and Romania (Bukovina), and northern Italy (Brianza).

8. In which province(s) and/or territories will you find the Canadian Rockies?

Answer: British Columbia and Alberta

The Canadian Rocky Mountains, or Rockies, are part of the North American Rocky Mountains and extend north from the state of Montana in the US. Canada's two westernmost provinces share the Rockies. The Canadian Rockies are in British Columbia and Alberta, and are bounded by the Rocky Mountain Trench in the west, and the prairie provinces in the east.

The Rockies do not extend into the Yukon Territory or Alaska.

9. Which of these "A" countries, though landlocked, has a coastline on a large inland body of water?

Answer: Azerbaijan

One of the transcontinental countries located at the border of Europe and Asia, Azerbaijan is a small country in the South Caucasus that borders Russia, Georgia, Armenia, Iran, and Turkey. The Caspian Sea, the world's largest inland body of water, forms Azerbaijan's eastern border.

The country's capital, the ancient city of Baku, lies on the western shore of the Caspian Sea, 28 m (92 ft) below sea level - the world's lowest-lying national capital. A group of islands, the Baku Archipelago, is located near the capital, off the coast of the Caspian Sea. Of the three wrong answers, only Afghanistan is also landlocked.
