2. Utah
Utah is known as the "Beehive State". Mormon settlers adopted the beehive symbol as far back as 1848 to represent their new area. Bees represent hard work and industry, two qualities the state is proud to stand behind.
3. Florida
Florida has been officially known as the "Alligator State" since 1987 when legislation named the alligator the official state reptile. Florida is home to the Everglades, a vast untamed swamp region with a wide assortment of exotic animals.
4. Hawaii
Hawaiian license plates contain the rainbow to celebrate the state's beautiful tropical climate and their "Rainbow State" nickname. The University of Hawaii has used the Rainbow Warriors mascot for years.
5. Louisiana
Since 1812, Louisiana has adopted the pelican as their state symbol. The seafaring bird is pictured on their state coin and even their NBA team goes by the New Orleans Pelicans.
6. Maryland
Maryland has been called "The Oyster State" for their state's love of the popular seafood delicacy and their Chesapeake Bay that produces many of the country's finest oysters. The Blue Point oyster is the most popular in the area.
7. Delaware
Delaware was adopted "The First State" and "The Diamond State" as slogans. While you may think it was due to the discovery of diamonds in the area, instead it is believed that Thomas Jefferson named Delaware a "jewel" among the states for its prime location and the diamond nickname stuck.
8. South Dakota
In 1949, South Dakota adopted the coyote as the state's official animal. In 1924, the official crest of the South Dakota Army National Guard featured a coyote. The state loves the coyote's ability to adapt and survive under a variety of conditions.
9. Massachusetts
Who doesn't remember seeing Boston Baked Beans on the Thanksgiving table? 17th Century Puritans created the dish in the Massachusetts area and replaced bacon with salt pork. The popularity of the dish caused Massachusetts to be known as "The Baked Bean State".
10. Mississippi
In 1900, Mississippi children voted for the state flower and chose the magnolia. Since then Mississippi has taken the slogan of the Magnolia State. When the U.S. released the bicentennial quarters in 1976, Mississippi has a magnolia flower on the back of their quarter.
