Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. La Sagrada Familia

Though construction started on this massive Barcelona church in 1882, the build was so massive that its erection continued over the next century and a half, becoming one of the most complex architectural sites in the world. Known in full as Basílica i Temple Expiatori de la Sagrada Família, this church is one of Europe's most recognizable buildings. Designer Antoni Gaudí, who died in 1926 with the structure only a quarter complete, was buried there.
2. Mallorca

One of the Balearic Islands, Mallorca is one of Spain's largest spots in the Mediterranean and was first occupied nearly five thousand years ago, eventually becoming a Roman settlement for agriculture due to its favourable land and weather. In the modern era, Mallorca (and its beautiful major city of Palma de Mallorca) is a picturesque destination rich in history, culture, and sights.

Its beaches are its biggest draw, especially for European expats and tourists.
3. Alhambra

A massive Islamic palace in the city of Granada, the Alhambra started construction in the 13th century AD in the Sierra Nevada mountains of Andalusia. Decorated thoroughly with Moorish ornamentation throughout its structure, it's one of the best-preserved structures of its type and one of the more famous landmarks in this part of Spain. Granada itself, and the hills next to the Alhambra, are best known for their high-altitude skiing despite being a short drive from the Mediterranean coast.
4. Madrid

The centrally-located capital city of Spain, Madrid is one of the largest cities in the European Union. Sitting on the River Manzanares, Madrid is found in the middle of the plains at one of the furthest points in the nation from the ocean or the sea.

This does give it the benefit, however, of being an intersection for travel and commerce in the country. Visitors get to enjoy amazing Medieval architecture, the Prado Museum, and a thriving art scene when they arrive.
5. Ceuta

An autonomous city of Spain found on the African continent, Ceuta is a unique case, being established as a Spanish city in the seventeenth century and remaining a key Andalusian military and trade point. In modern times, it's a small port city on the inner side of the Strait of Gibraltar surrounded entirely by Morocco. Though a Spanish-speaking city, it's clear from its contents that there is a strong Arabic influence to its structures and landmarks.
6. Guggenheim Museum Bilbao

A uniquely-constructed piece of contemporary architecture devised by Frank Gehry, the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao sits on the edge of the Estuary of Bilbao in the heart of Basque Country in the north of Spain. Amongst the museum's permanent collection one could view works by Picasso, Kandinsky, Renoir, Pissarro, and Pollack. Of course, if you're not interested in art, Bilbao itself is a beautiful city built in a valley between two mountain ranges. Known for its architecture and design, it still retains old world charm while integrating futurist elements.
7. Las Palmas

While there is a Palma de Mallorca in the Balearics, Las Palmas refers to the largest city on Gran Canaria, the largest of the Canary Islands off the African coast. These originally volcanic islands contain a significant Spanish population though its past also included occupation by the French and Portuguese. Additionally, these islands sit about a hundred kilometres off the coast from Morocco-- they're sixteen times that distance from mainland Spain. Las Palmas is warm year-round, and acts as a typical starting point for visitors seeking idyllic, tropical beaches.
8. Pamplona

Found in the Navarre region in northeastern Spain, the city of Pamplona is best known for its annual Running of the Bulls, a famous event in which locals (and daring tourists) take their chances running through the city streets with live bulls during the yearly Festival of San Fermín (which takes place in mid-July).

The city, historically, has been known for its fortress and Gothic churches.
9. Ronda

The town of Ronda, Spain, found in the southern province of Málaga, has grown to be a unique tourist destination in modern times because of its unique bridges, especially Puente Nuevo, crossing a deep gorge over the Guadalevín in the middle of its old town, La Ciudad.

While the nearby city of Málaga sits on the Mediterranean coast, Ronda is deeper inland, built on the plateaus west of Parque Nacional Sierra de las Nieves.
10. Ibiza

Part of the Balearic Islands, due east off the Spanish coast from Valencia, Ibiza rose in popularity in the twentieth century as a party destination. Tourism and recreation have been the key industries of these islands, fuelled primarily by raucous nightlife, electronic music, and beach festivals.

This being said, Ibiza is still a relatively large island with a unique history reaching back to Phoenician settlement in the seventh century BCE.
