Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Alfalfa, pictured here, is the alternate name for the perennial of the Fabaceae legume family that shares its name with what large Swiss lake?

Answer: Lucerne

Located in central Switzerland, the surface area of Lake Lucerne is 113.6 km sq (43.9 sq miles). It rises in the Reuss Valley and due to its complicated shape, as well as its proximity to several mountains, provides abundant delightful vistas.

During the construction of a pipeline in around 2020, archaeologists found the remains for Bronze Age village on the lake-bed, leading to indications that there had been settlements in the area as early as 3000 B.C.
2. The Inuktitut name of which lake in Nunavut, Canada means 'big lake joined by a river at both ends'?

Answer: Baker

The hamlet of Baker Lake was given its English name in 1761 in honour of Sir William Baker, the 11th Governor of the Hudson's Bay Company. It is Nunavut's sole inland community and is home to eleven Inuit groups. Gold mining contributes to the economy of the region. The climate of Baker Lake is subarctic meaning that it has short, cool summers and long, frigid winters.
3. Which spooky sounding body of water is the fourth largest lake (by surface area) of the five North American Great Lakes?

Answer: Erie

Lake Erie is on the border of the Canadian state of Ontario and four US states - Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and New York. Numerous rivers empty into Lake Erie, while the lake discharges through the Niagara River. At its deepest point it is 64m (210'). Its name comes from the Erie nation of American Indians, whose name means "People of the Panther", or "Cat Nation".
4. What lake in far-east Turkey sounds like a mode of transport?

Answer: Van

Lake Van is the largest body of water in Turkey and the second largest in the Middle East. At its widest point, it is more than 119 km (74 mi). The lake's name comes from the Urartian capital, a Eurasian kingdom that flourished in the Armenian Highlands, on eastern shore of the lake around the 10th - 8th centuries B.C.

The Urartu people used the water flowing from a nearby spring to create the Canal of Meinua; it led to Van lake, a feat of engineering which irrigated the region with fresh water over a distance of about 45 km (28 miles).
5. The name of what lake in Tasmania, Australia, shares its name with a French pastry and the curved shape of a waxing or waning moon?

Answer: Crescent

The Crescent Lake, located in Interlaken, Tasmania, is a relatively shallow man-made lake that is home to the endemic Salmoniformes fish, Golden Galaxia. These creatures cohabit quite happily with brown trout. When carp (an introduced pest) was found in the lake, the lake was closed until the carp was eradicated.

The lake is surrounded by pasture and woodland, with marshlands extending around the northern and western shores and is a popular camping area.
6. Sounding like the picture but spelled differently, what lake of Canada is one of he largest freshwater lakes without an island in North America? Watch your spelling!

Answer: Dore

Doré Lake is in Northern Ontario. The name Doré is the French-Canadian term for 'walleye' (a yellow pike), ultimately derived from the French word 'd'or', or gold. The lake is replete with Largemouth Bass, Northern Pike, and Smallmouth Bass. Dore lake is around 7km (4.3mi) in length and 3.5km (2.2 mi) in width.
7. What lake of Rwanda shares its name with a traditional Japanese drink?

Answer: Sake

This picturesque lake is located in Rwanda's Eastern Province. The lake provides important support for regional communities' fishing, coffee production and tourism activities. In the early 21st century a project to halt erosion of the banks of the lake was undertaken by local authorities employing local people.

Other sustainability and beautification projects for Lake Sake aim to balance the impacts of tourism with access to the lake.
8. What pond is located in Surrey, U.K., and was so-named because it was used as a water source for a nearby forge?

Answer: Hammer

Several lakes in Surrey and Sussex were known as hammer lakes and were vital in the production of household tools, agricultural machinery, religious artefacts and military equipment. Hammer pond in Leith Hill, Surrey is home to a large variety of birdlife. The noise of the forge is gone from these lakes, but the beauty and rich history remains.
9. What blissful volcanic crater lake is on the border between China and North Korea?

Answer: Heaven

Not named for the fact that it's recognised as the highest crater lake in the world (though it is that) but for its incredible beauty, Heaven Lake is located partly in North Korea's Ryanggang Province and partly in Jilin Province, in northeast China. It was created in 946 A.D. by an eruption of Paektu Mountain.

It is also the location of the 2007 alleged sighting of the Lake Tianchi Monster - a creature similar in appearance to the Loch Ness monster.
10. What lake on the Colorado River shares its name with an ancient beverage?

Answer: Mead

Located on the common border of Nevada and Arizona, around 24 mi (39 km) east of Las Vegas, Lake Mead has over 1200km (750mi) of shoreline, and is a reservoir formed by the Hoover Dam on the Colorado River. It provides recreational opportunities for fishing, boating and swimming and other water-based and camping activities. Lake Mead was named for Elwood Mead who oversaw this and other major projects in the region.
