Some are very small - often sit on peninsulas near rocky coastlines to warn sailors that they are getting close to land.
They can also be very large. The largest in the world is the Arabian Peninsula which contains eight and is bordered by the Sea to the west and southwest, the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman to the northeast, the Levant and to the north and the Arabian Sea and the Indian Ocean to the southeast. Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
Answer:

The name peninsula is derived from the Latin paeninsula derived from paene 'almost', and insula 'island'. They are often used to serve as borders to a state or country.

More than one of the formations can combine to form a peninsula. Florida is an example of continental drift, marine settlements and marine transgressions all contributing to its formation.

The Antarctic and Cape Cod peninsulas are caused by glaciers while Alaska is a volcanic peninsula where magma has erupted into the sea. Boundaries in plate tectonics are responsible for the Arabian (divergent) and Indian (convergent) formations.

Marine transgressions, aka changes in sea level, can form peninsulas but can also affect existing ones if the water levels become too high and cut them off from the mainland creating islands.

The largest peninsula by number of countries is the Balkan which contains at least parts of twelve - Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Greece, Kosovo, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Romania, Serbia, Slovenia and Turkey.
