The chart contains ten clues. Each state needs to replace one of the numbers. The clues on either side must both apply to the state. For example, State #1 needs to border California but not the Pacific Ocean. To make this quiz trickier, some states may fit in multiple spots but all ten states only fit in one specific way.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Nevada
Nevada borders California to the Golden State's east. Nevada is a landlocked state so it does not border the Pacific Ocean, or any ocean for that matter.
2. Pennsylvania
Pennsylvania is located in the eastern U.S. so it does not border the Pacific Ocean. It is, however, one of the original thirteen colonies. Pennsylvania became the second state to enter the Union in December 1787.
3. Rhode Island
Rhode Island was the last of the thirteen colonies to enter the Union, which it did in May 1790. Rhode Island was once officially named "Rhode Island and Providence Plantations", although it was simply called Rhode Island for short. In 2020, a voter referendum approved removing the words "and the Providence Plantations" from the state's name which officially became simply "Rhode Island".
Rhode Island could fit in spot #2, however the correct answer for #2 (Pennsylvania) cannot fit properly in spot #3 because it does not have a two-word name.
4. North Dakota
North Dakota is a two-word named state that borders the Canadian provinces of Saskatchewan and Manitoba.
North Dakota could fit in spot #7 but the correct answer for #7 (Louisiana) cannot fit in spot #4 because it does not border Canada nor does it have a two-word name.
5. Montana
Montana borders three Canadian provinces: British Columbia, Alberta and Saskatchewan. It also contains a small portion of Yellowstone National Park in the Southern portion of the state.
6. Wyoming
Wyoming contains the vast majority of Yellowstone National Park with about 96% of the park's land area being in Wyoming. A white buffalo appears against a blue background in the center of Wyoming's state flag.
Wyoming can fit in spot #7 but the correct answer for #7 (Louisiana) cannot fit in spot #6 since it does not contain any part of Yellowstone National Park.
7. Louisiana
The flag of Louisiana, the Pelican State, features a mother pelican feeding her three chicks on a blue background. The words "Union. Justice. Confidence" appear across the bottom. Most of Louisiana became part of the U.S. after the Louisiana Purchase.
8. Kansas
The entire state of Kansas became part of the U.S. as a result of the Louisiana Purchase. Kansas entered the Union in 1861 as a free state. The status of slavery in Kansas was hotly contested and violence over the subject led the territory to be nicknamed Bleeding Kansas.
Kansas could be placed in spot #7. However, the correct answer for spot #7 (Louisiana) cannot fit in spot #8 because Louisiana did not enter the Union as a free state.
9. Maine
Maine entered the Union as a free state 1820 as part of the Missouri Compromise to keep the balance of slave and free states equal. Prior to this, Maine was part of the state of Massachusetts. Portland is the largest city in Maine while its capital is Augusta.
10. Oregon
Like Maine, Oregon's largest city is also called Portland while its capital is Salem. It borders California to the north. Oregon also borders Nevada, Idaho and Washington.
Oregon can fit in spot #9 but the correct answer for spot #9 (Maine) cannot fit in spot #10 because it does not border California.
