Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When first looking for a home to live in, our estate agent showed us one in a "posh" section of Weybridge, Surrey, called St. George's Hill. In addition to its golf club and tennis club, this gated neighborhood is also home to this legendary crooner.

Answer: Sir Cliff Richard

A cab driver (who was not British-born) had originally told me that St. George's Hill was home to Cliff Richards, from the Rolling Stones. I told him that Keith Richards played with the Stones, and that I had never heard of Cliff Richards. He was adamant it was Cliff from the Stones. For those who do not know who Sir Cliff Richard (no s) is, like me at the time, the only similar singing star I can think of is Pat Boone. Obviously, Sir Cliff Richard and Keith Richards are near polar opposites.
2. Once we found a home, we had to find a school for the children. There are a number of "American" schools in Surrey, and we chose TASIS. TASIS is an acronym for what?

Answer: The American School In Switzerland

Yup, in Switzerland. It is referred to as TASIS England. The original TASIS was founded in 1956 near Lugano, Switzerland, by M. Crist Fleming. There are also TASIS in Cyprus, Greece, France, Spain and Puerto Rico.
3. TASIS is located in Thorpe, Surrey. Thorpe is also the home of a great amusement park with some pretty crazy roller coasters. What is the name of this park?

Answer: Thorpe Park

Thorpe Park is a member of the Merlin Group, which includes Legoland, Madame Tussaud's and the London Eye, among others. One can buy a season pass that allows access to all the associated venues.

Legoland is in nearby Windsor, and the other two don't exist.
4. Just down the road from Weybridge is the town of Virginia Water, known for its park and lake. The lake has been featured in what well known series of movies?

Answer: Harry Potter

Many of the water scenes in the Harry Potter movies where filmed here, enhanced greatly by computer graphics in the final editing.
5. Also in Virginia Water is this golf club, which is home to the World Match Play Championships

Answer: Wentworth

Wentworth is a beautiful club and is the home course of Ernie Els, whose house I once hit with an errant shot (no damage done). With its three championship courses, it is and has been the home of many different championships. There are no carts for one to drive up and down the hills on the course, it's all walking.

All the other three are nearby golf courses, either public or private. The British take their golf very seriously, and I enjoyed both the playing and the course atmosphere immensely.
6. Just outside of St. George's Hill, in Weybridge, is a motorsport and avaiation museum. What is the name of the first ever oval style, banked racecourse that is home to this museum?

Answer: Brooklands

Opened in 1907, Brooklands was home to many firsts, including the first ever 24 hour motor event, the first vehicle to travel 100 miles in an hour and the first British Grand Prix. There is not much of the original track left, but you can climb to the top of the nearly 30 foot, 30 degree bank section. It scared my children to be near the top.

Selwyn Edge actually was the driver who won the first 24-hour motor race, Lakeside Auto Speedway was also built in 1907 in San Diego, California, and the The Brickyard is the nickname for the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, home of the famous Indy 500.
7. To get to my job in London, I would take the train every day. Living in Weybridge, which train station would I most likely catch my train from?

Answer: Weybridge

Of course. Walton-on-Thames was close by as well.

Byfleet and New Haw and Woking were both stations I have been to by accident, by either missing my stop or getting on the wrong train. Dorking, while a pleasant enough town, was the only place I stated that I would not live, due to the name.
8. Speaking of the trains, the line through Weybridge is run by Southwest Trains. What London station would one arrive at if travelling this route?

Answer: Waterloo

One could also catch the Eurostar out of Waterloo to continental Europe. From Waterloo, I had the option of taxi, bus, or tube to get to Victoria station, which was close to my office outside of Buckingham Palace.

Paddington station is in West London and is where one would catch the Heathrow Express to the airport. King's Cross is in north London and is the starting station for most points north.
9. Some American holidays are not celebrated in the UK, such as Thanksgiving and 4th of July (obviously). On Thanksgiving, many Americans living in the Greater London area congregate at this place in central London for a Thanksgiving service, before heading to large parties at someone's home and the obligatory turkey and trimmings.

Answer: St. Paul's Cathedral

It is open to all, not only Americans. It is usually attended to by the United States Ambassador and his family, as well as a number of US dignitaries living in the UK. While tickets are not necessary, if you want a seat, you must arrive early.

St. Peter's is in the Vatican, St. Mark's is in Venice. The local pub was my favorite thing about living in the UK.
10. There were many historic locations that we visited in and around Weybridge with friends and family, including Runnymede. What event occurred in Runnymede in 1215 which formed the basis for the current English civil system, and in fact the United States as well?

Answer: Signing of the Magna Carta

Actually mentioned by name in the document, Runnymede is generally accepted as the most likely location where King John sealed the Magna Carta, which forced him to relinquish certain rights, most notably that the King's will was bound to the law, and created rights for subjects, the most famous being the writ of habeus corpus, allowing appeal against unlawful imprisonment.
