Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In which sea is the Isle of Man located?

Answer: Irish Sea

The Isle of Man is located between Great Britain and Ireland in the northern half of the Irish Sea. The island is almost equidistant from England, Scotland and Northern Ireland.
2. To get to the Isle of Man you will either have to fly into Ronaldsway Airport, or get on a ferry. Which of these cities did NOT offer a ferry service to the island?

Answer: Southampton

Liverpool (all year), Belfast and Dublin (summer only) all offer ferry connections to the Isle of Man, as does the Lancashire town of Heysham. All ferries arrive at the island's capital, Douglas. Southampton is located in southern England, so it would not be viable to run a ferry from there to the Isle of Man.
3. Because the Isle of Man is a Crown Dependency, it doesn't send elected members to the UK parliament in London. Instead, it has its own parliament, which it claims to be the oldest in the world - what is it called?

Answer: Tynwald

The Tynwald has existed since the year 979 AD, making it well over 1000 years old. It consists of two chambers, the Legislative Council and the House of Keys, which have 11 and 24 members respectively.
4. Which annual sporting event is the Isle of Man famous for?

Answer: The TT (motorcycling)

The Isle of Man Tourist Trophy, normally abbreviated to the TT, is a series of motorcycle races which take place every May/June on the island. The races attract thousands of spectators to the island, but, sadly, they are also known for being extremely dangerous, with many riders being killed since the first races in 1907.
5. What name is given to the three-legged emblem which appears on the flag of the Isle of Man?

Answer: Triskelion

The flag of the Isle of Man is red with a white triskelion, adorned with golden spurs, in the middle. The triskelion is a Celtic symbol consisting of three legs radiating from a centre.
6. The "Manx" is a tailless breed of what domestic animal originating on the Isle of Man?

Answer: Cat

The Manx cat is normally completely tailless, although some may have a short stump of a tail. They can come in any colour of coat, and are believed to have originated on the island through natural mutation.
7. A popular tourist attraction on the Isle of Man is the Laxey Wheel, the largest surviving waterwheel in the world. What alternative name is it known by?

Answer: Lady Isabella

The Laxey Wheel/Lady Isabella is located in the village of Laxey, and has a diameter of over 72 feet. It was built out of wood in 1854, and was used to pump water from a local mine. The Lady Isabella moniker comes from the wife of the then Governor of the island.
8. Castle Rushen is a medieval castle, home to former Manx kings, located in which town, the former capital of the Isle of Man?

Answer: Castletown

Castle Rushen dates from the 10th century, and still exists as a museum and tourist attraction. Over the centuries it has had various uses, including a mint, prison, and fortress. In 1265, the last Manx ruler, Magnus Olafsson, died there. Castletown served as capital of the Isle of Man until 1869 when it was superseded by Douglas.
9. What is the name of the highest mountain on the Isle of Man?

Answer: Snaefell

Snaefell has an elevation of 2,037 feet and can be ascended in the summer by an electric tram service called the Snaefell Mountain Railway, which runs for four miles from Laxey to the mountain summit.
10. True or False - the Isle of Man's historic language, Manx, is a "dead " language, with nobody speaking it in the 21st Century?

Answer: False

Manx did actually "die" in 1974, when the last native speaker at the time, Ned Maddrell, died. Fortunately the language was revived in the 1990s, and by 2022 when this quiz was written there were over 2000 speakers of the language, albeit they all speak English as a first language.
